Cottage | 1 bedrooms | sleeps 2
Cosy and romantic one bedroomed cottage in beautiful countryside with lovely views across the Solway Firth to Scotland. Great walking and cycling country and close to stunning beaches. Character cottage newly renovated in 2013 with private garden and patio. Use of owners red sports car by arrangement(1st May - 31st October). Welcome pack of home made and local produce included.. One well behaved dog welcome. Close to village pubs (approx 1 mile away) . Fishing nearby and Arkleby leisure pool with sauna and hot tub 1 minute away. Approx 6 miles from Cockermouth.Home deliveries are possible from the Sainsburys in Cockermouth or Iceland, Asda or Tesco branches in Workington.
This cottage wlll appeal to those wanting a peaceful holiday in the country. This is an area which is relatively undiscovered so you are unlikely to encounter the high numbers of tourists found in some of the Lake District honeypots. A car is essential (we have two buses a week!) but within easy driving distance is the wonderful scenery of the north lakes (our nearest lake is Bassenthwaite) and within approx 20 minutes drive you have Ullswater,Crummock Water and Buttermere. The towns of Cockermouth and Keswick and the City of Carlisle are all within easy driving distance. We are about 10 minutes drive to the beautiful but deserted Solway coast.
The cottage has a lounge/diner (15'6" X 11'6") ,well equipped kitchen (7'6" X 8' )and fully tiled shower room with enclosed power shower,WC and hand basin (9' X 3'9") on the ground floor and generous sized bedroom (15'6" X 12'6") with beamed ceiling and exposed stone wall upstairs. As this is a traditional rural cottage we have furnished it in a traditional way. Because the stairs are quite steep the cottage is not suitable for people with mobility difficulties or children There is a lawned private garden to the front with lovely views and a secluded dog proof rear patio area also with good views - an ideal area for a bar b q (bar b q provided)
If you would like to see more pictures of the cottage and surrounding area some guests from Canada who stayed in June 2014 have very kindly provided a link to some super shots - the link is http://goo,gl/w1050Y
We are happy to consider lets for 2 nights upwards and are very flexible regarding changeover days. The cottage adjoins our house and you can be assured of a warm welcome on arrival and total privacy and seclusion during your stay.

The Cumbria/Lake District
The Lake District is renowned for it's dramatic scenery and opportunities for walking and other country pursuits. We are on the fringe of the Lake District National Park and an easy drive to some of the most scenic areas in the country. A day out in the Lake District is never dull with its abundance of bird and wildlife, quaint country pubs and tea rooms and interesting towns and villages. Whether you are coming for a short break or a longer holiday there are plenty of things to do and see. If walking on a dramatic deserted beach watching a glorious sunset is your thing then look no further than the Solway Coast with its views across to Scotland. If driving through beautiful country lanes in an open topped sports car does it for you this can be arranged! Not too far afield from us is the City of Carlisle,Hadrians Wall and the renowned countryside of the Scottish Borders and Dumfries and Galloway - all eminently doable as a day out.
Our nearest main town is Cockermouth about six miles away. Here in this very attractive town (the birthplace of William Wordsworth) you will find a wide variety of independent shops, pubs and restaurants together with three supermarkets. Jennings Brewery is in Cockermouth and a trip around the brewery is a must as is a visit to the Wordsworth Museum. Our nearest villages are Gilcrux (where there is a pub(serving food),bistro, church, post office and village hall) and Parsonby (where there is a pub (serving food) and church.) Both villages are within easy walking distance. Trout fishing is available at Gilcrux Trout Fisheries. At the bottom of our lane (about 1 min in the car) is Arkleby Leisure Pool - a fantastic heated large indoor pool and also a sauna and hot tub. This facility can be booked in advance by the hour so you can have the place to yourselves! Our area is very popular with cyclists and we can offer secure cycle storage.
Our nearest shops are in Aspatria which is about 2 1/2 miles away. Here you will find several pubs,a Spar and Co-Op ,a shop that sells everything!,chippie and Chinese and Mediteranean takeaways, filling station, library cash point, doctors and several churches. In Aspatria be sure to pay a visit to the shop at the Lake District Cheese Company creamery for extra mature cheddar to die for at a bargain price. There is a nine hole golf course in Aspatria and there are also golf courses in Cockermouth,Maryport and Silloth.
Wardhall is a sleepy little hamlet of about 30 souls all of whom are very friendly. Our lane is very quiet with probably as many tractors as cars. Here at Wardhall you can enjoy the peace of the countryside with the convenience of being close to every facility.

We thank you for leaving your review for Stable Cottage and are disappointed to note that it did not entirely meet your expectations. We will try and deal with the points you have raised.
In the email sent to you giving directions to the cottage we politely ask that you park in the lay by just past the cottage. The reason for this is that we are sensitive to the needs of our very good neighbours who live in the cottages opposite and who customarily park their cars in front of their cottages. You obviously chose to ignore our request and were indeed approached by one of the neighbours. We have since spoken with our neighbours, who we are sure would not have 'shouted' at you, and it appears that when the parking lay by was pointed out to you your response was somewhat insensitive.
Our lane is normally very quiet. We do say in our write up for the cottage on Holiday Lettings that we have almost as many tractors as cars on the lane.Your visit was at the Bank Holiday weekend at the end of August. This is traditionally second cut silaging time in the country and for that reason there may have been slightly more tractors about than usual. I'm not sure that we can be held responsible for the speed at which the tractors travel.Maybe it's because we are used to it but we have never found the level of traffic noise from the lane objectionable. We have never received any complaints from our guests before or after your stay and indeed the comments on Tripadvisor and in our visitors book in the cottage would indicate the reverse in that guests seem to relish the peace and quiet here.
Your point with regard to the steepness of the stairs would seem to indicate that you had not adequately read our description before booking. We say quite clearly in our write up that as the stairs are quite steep the cottage is not suitable for children or people with mobility difficulties.
The cottage is small but again we would refer you to our description where the room sizes are quite clearly set out.
We further take note of your point regarding the heating and the fact that you felt cold on the first night. We are sorry that you were not comfortable and we of course responded to your complaint once you drew it to our attention the following day. There are central heating radiators in the bedroom, the lounge and kitchen and a heated towel rail in the shower room. In addition there is a 2 Kw fire in the lounge and a 1 Kw heater in the bedroom. The bed is provided with a 13.5 tog quilt and an additional throw over quilt with additional blankets and pillows in the wardrobe. At this time of year we set the default temperature for the central heating at 17.5 degrees. Following your complaint we increased this to 25 degrees.
You are correct to state that there is no tumble dryer in the cottage but we do not advertise that there is one. There is a retractable washing line on the rear patio and the information folder in the cottage clearly states that we are more than happy to dry washing for guests in our tumble dryer.
The mobile phone signal in this area can be variable depending on which network one is using. Our mobiles are with Talk Talk and Vodaphone and the signal although not brilliant is servicebale. We have never previously received any complaints with regard to the phone signal. When guests arrive at the cottage we always say to them that if there are any problems or we can help in any way just to call at the house. We were unaware of your emergency and had we known you were struggling to get a signal we would have happily let you use our land line. The internet speed here is not fast and we advise guests of this, It is perfectly adequate for surfing the net and taking off emails but indeed may not be as superfast as you are used to in the city. This is just one of the joys of being in the country where our pace of life in general is much slower.
We are sorry that you thought that the leisure pool was expensive. We have had many guests who have used it and found the experience of having such a large heated pool with stunning surroundings,a sauna and hot tub all to themselves a thoroughly enjoyable experience. We often go with our family. You will appreciate that we do not set the tariff for the pool and we always point out the alternative leisure facilities in Cockermouth.
We are not sure where you went to the beach and your experience does not seem to have been a good one. We suggest to guests who want to go to a beach that they visit the beach at Allonby, This beach never gets busy although at the Bank Holiday weekend there may have been more people than normal and a few kite surfers. We go to walk on this beach on average about twice a week and have never ever come across the problem with flies that you mention. We have never had any comments from guests other than that they have been impressed with the beach and particularly the lovely sunsets over the Solway Firth.
The reason that you had no water on the third night was due to a burst water main in Gilcrux (something totally out of our control). The water went off mid evening but was back on again by 4.00.a.m. From past experience after an interruption in the water supply the water can take on a somewhat 'milky' appearance but it is perfectly safe to use and drink. (United Utilities would not send water down the main that was not safe)We always keep a stock of bottled water and had you come to the house we would have gladly supplied you with some bottled water in addition to that already left in the cottage.
We are happy that you enjoyed your meal at the Bar'n Bistro. This is our local pub/restaurant that is frequented by many of our guests and gets consistently complimentary comments.
In conclusion we trust that we have addressed the points you have raised. We would have preferred to have discussed these matters face to face with you but since you chose to leave without even saying goodbye we did not get the opportunity to do this.
