The Cumbria/Lake District

The Lake District conjures up images of magnificent mountains and shimmering lakes and that is exactly what visitors find here. In fact the whole county of Cumbria is home to some of Britain's most beautiful scenery. This region has been a favourite all year round holiday destination for years and apart from its natural beauty it's also packed with lots of attractions and activities that cater for every kind of holidaymaker, from family holidays to romantic breaks for couples and from those who are looking for lots of activities and sports to those that prefer more gentle country pursuits. The Lake District National Park lies at the heart of Cumbria and contains well known and much loved holiday destinations such as Windermere, Bowness, Ambleside, Coniston and Grasmere, here there are lots of charming Lakeland villages to discover and visitor attractions for all the family. The northern and western lakes have miles of untouched natural rugged beauty and rural villages as well as being home to the historic northern lakes town of Keswick with its many shops, pubs and restaurants; providing a great holiday base. Other areas to discover include the Eden Valley, Cartmel peninsula, south east Cumbria and the Carlisle and Hadrian's Wall area; all equally beautiful and very handy for day trips into the lakes.

Mealsgate is a small hamlet situated on the old Roman Road between Carlisle and the Roman Fort at Papcastle. The hamlet which is just north of the river Ellen is well situated for exploring the Cumbrian coast, Hadrian's Wall and much of the northern Lake District. Just eight miles from Mealsgate is Bassenthwaite Lake, one of the largest lakes in the Lake District. Fishing and sailing are both popular past times here. Ospreys also inhabit the area with live webcams set up at Whinlatter Forest Visitors Centre during breeding season (May – Sep). There are plenty of enjoyable walks to be had with the magnificent Skiddaw and Grisedale Pike both an inviting challenge for any hiker. Cockermouth is situated ten miles west of Mealsgate and offers the visitor many amenities and access to the beautiful Cumbrian coastline where you can enjoy coastal walks and views over the Solway Firth
