The Cumbria/Lake District

The Lake District conjures up images of magnificent mountains and shimmering lakes and that is exactly what visitors find here. In fact the whole county of Cumbria is home to some of Britain's most beautiful scenery. This region has been a favourite all year round holiday destination for years and apart from its natural beauty it's also packed with lots of attractions and activities that cater for every kind of holidaymaker, from family holidays to romantic breaks for couples and from those who are looking for lots of activities and sports to those that prefer more gentle country pursuits. The Lake District National Park lies at the heart of Cumbria and contains well known and much loved holiday destinations such as Windermere, Bowness, Ambleside, Coniston and Grasmere, here there are lots of charming Lakeland villages to discover and visitor attractions for all the family. The northern and western lakes have miles of untouched natural rugged beauty and rural villages as well as being home to the historic northern lakes town of Keswick with its many shops, pubs and restaurants; providing a great holiday base. Other areas to discover include the Eden Valley, Cartmel peninsula, south east Cumbria and the Carlisle and Hadrian's Wall area; all equally beautiful and very handy for day trips into the lakes.

Cockermouth

Ellwood is situated in the town of Bridekirk just outside the well known market town of Cockermouth. The town runs alongside the River Cocker which receives water from the lakes of Buttermere, Crommock Water and Loweswater. Following the devastating floors in 2009 which saw all the shops totally destroyed the main street has now been completely transformed and is well and truly back up and running! There is a great selection of shops and restaurants and there are weekend craft and continental markets along the main street. From Ellwood you can also visit Wasdale which boasts England's deepest lake, Wastwater or climbs Englands's highest mountain, Scarfell Pike. Sea lovers can take to the coast which is also within easy reach where you can visit Whitehaven or Maryport where there are plenty of attractions for children to enjoy.
