About the home

Here we have the main house with attached barn conversion offering accommodation for up to 22 people. A small cottage on the end provides accommodation for a further four people and can be rented separately. The gardens are superb and cover three acres. Children particularly enjoy the secret garden hidden among the rhododendrons, accessed via a wooden bridge over a small stream.

Lamplugh is the perfect starting place to explore the rest of the Lake District. Loweswater Lake is your nearest lake being just three miles away. Here there are lovely woodland walks by the lake with an award winning pub at the end serving lovely meals and local ales. If you prefer big mountains, then Ennerdale lake is just four miles away with Pillar mountain range towering above it. There are also good mountain biking trails here, fishing (permit required), climbing, canoeing and pony trekking (on Cold Fell).

For shops, Cockermouth is your nearest town and has a Sainsburys, as well as a good selection of small independent shops. There are pubs, restaurants, cafes and a small cinema.

The main accommodation comprises of 11 bedrooms - 4 doubles, 1 zip&link (usually made as a double but can be a twin by prior request), 5 twins and 1 set of bunks. Most of the rooms have their own sink, and there are four bathrooms plus an additional toilet. If you take the cottage too, then this gives you an additional 2 bedrooms - 1 double and 1 twin, plus another bathroom. The main sitting room for everyone is in the barn conversion with an additional sitting room in the original house. There are two kitchens and an additional smaller dining room to the main dining area in the main sitting room.

There is plenty of space outside with garden furniture to enjoy the Lakeland sunshine!

Conditions

Upon booking we ask for a third deposit with the remaining balance due six weeks before your stay. We also ask for a damage deposit of £200 which is returned within a fortnight of your stay. The only extra we charge is £15 per dog. The prices shown are for renting the main accommodation for 22 people. If you would like the cottage too for an additional 4 people, then please contact us for prices.

The Cumbria/Lake District region

The Lake District is a great place to come on holiday. There is beauty in all the seasons, from frosty weather in Winter where you will occasionally see sheep huddled under a blanket of snow, to the long balmy evenings in the Summer. My favourite time of year is September and October where the Autumn colours are magnificent. The daffodils in March/April and bluebells in May are just beautiful, and very restful.

The Cockermouth / Lamplugh area

Scafell is England's highest mountain and a half hour drive takes you to the bottom, ready for the big climb up. The thing about the Lake District is that all the mountains here are manageable in a (sometimes long) day. If you don't fancy big climbs, then there are lovely walks through woods and alongside the lakes.

For a bit of adventure there is plenty to suit every level of experience - rock climbing, canoeing, abseiling, mountain biking, pony trekking and Go Ape at Whinlatter. All these experiences within half an hour of Croft House.

There are some superb stately homes, many of which are still lived in. Muncaster Castle is my favourite but there are plenty of others to choose from.

And if you have kids there is an indoor play area at Cockermouth (if it's raining). I like Trotters Exotic Animal Farm at Bassenthwaite. The outdoor play area at Whinlatter is amazing, and free (although you need to pay for parking). There is an aquarium at Maryport which is worth a visit (again, good if it's raining).

Other activities include rowing on the lake at Derwentwater (Keswick), go karting at Maryport or Rowrah, museums at Whitehaven and Keswick (I particularly like the Puzzling Place in Keswick, my kids like the Pencil Museum in Keswick and the Beacon at Whitehaven).

We go to the Kirkstile Inn at Loweswater for food. Cockermouth also has some very good restaurants - the Quince and Medlar is a veggie restaurant with a good reputation. The Bitter End is a good pub with good food.

Cockermouth is a lovely town with independent shops and a Sainsbury's. If antiques are your thing, you can spend a happy couple of hours browsing in Cockermouth. There is a small cinema here too, but if you want a multi-screen cinema, go to Dunmail Park in Workington. Workington also has high street shopping.

The easiest way to get to Low Millgillhead is by car - leave the M6 motorway at Penrith (Junction 40), follow the A66 past Keswick to Cockermouth, then turn left onto the A5806. Carry on for about 10 minutes and then turn left into Lamplugh Village.

If you're coming by public transport, you can take the train to Penrith which is on the mainline, and then bus to Cockermouth. You'll need to take a taxi from Cockermouth.

The nearest airports are Manchester or Newcastle.
