The Cumbria/Lake District

Cumbria is home to the Lake District, also known as the Lakes or Lakeland is world renowned for the beautiful lakes and mountains (or fells). The Lake District is home to the highest mountain in England: Scafell Pike measuring 978m (3210 ft).

The National Park was founded in 1951 to offer protection to the well known beauty spots and landscape that has provided inspiration to generations of artists' writers and musicians.

From a stroll around Buttermere to a climb to the highest peak a holiday in the English lakes provides exercise for the body and relaxation for the mind.

Market towns such as Keswick and Cockermouth give the opportunity to sample the delights of Cumbrian fare many establishments now source their ingredients from local producers.

Whilst areas like Bowness on Windermere and Ambleside are extremely popular other less commercial locations like the Solway Coast and Allonby give you space and quiet with the vast open shingle beaches the majestic beauty of the Solway.

A Cumbrian Cottage holiday booked through Stay Lakeland assures you of quality and value we have a unique selection of accommodations from simple Holiday home caravans to stunning timber lodges plus a range of cottages in and around this beautiful part of the country.

Cockermouth

Set at the confluence of the rivers Cocker and Derwent, Cockermouth is a quaint market town, which although dates back to medieval era the main period of growth was during the Georgian period of the early eighteenth century.

The town is eight miles north-west of Keswick hosts a number galleries, river walks and places of historical interest. Cockermouth is the birth place of poet William Wordsworth.

This gem of a town with ample galleries, river walks and historic Cockermouth Castle. Lots of pubs, specialist shopping and restaurants. Close to Bassenthwaite Lake there are so many other things to do and see in Cockermouth, making it the perfect family location. Cockermouth also does not suffer overcrowding of some of the more central Lake District towns.

An interesting way to explore the town is the Cockermouth Trail. The trail takes you around a fascinating walk through the town’s history, exploring nineteen of the famous landmarks and some lesser known landmarks of the town. Maps can be obtained from the Tourist Information Center.

The River Derwent flows behind the Main Street and Wordsworth House. There are pleasant footpaths and seats along the banks of the make for a delightful walk along the river. There is also a large car park next to the river with access into the Memorial Gardens and over the bridge into the Main Street. The river can be flowed into the brewery and then into Market Place.

In addition to the galleries and places of historical interest the town has a range of traditional stores and some more popular national stores. The town also has a large number of bars and restaurants, many of which are located on the newly re-developed Market Place and Main Street.

As the main period of growth for Cockermouth was during the Georgian period much of the road layout and buildings were developed during this time; with a great number of buildings retaining their original features, each year to celebrate the Gorgian influence, the town holds a Georgian Fair.

Cockermouth has a number of popular visitor attractions such as: Wordsworth House, The Sheep and Wool Centre, the Castlegate House Gallery, the Kirkgate Centre and Jennings Brewery; which produces 'real ale' and has been located in the town centre since 1828. Visitors can also take a guided tour of the brewing facilities and discover more information about this 175 year old process and even sample and take home the finished product from their on-site shop.

All of this makes Cockermouth the ideal place for both a quite and relaxing break and a hectic sight-seeing holiday.

This reviewer is one of a group of 24 who stayed for a weekend at the Big White House in February 2014.
We work very hard to offer the house to the highest standards for all our guests to enjoy and as will be seen from previous reviews and indeed our 4 star rating with Quality in tourism assessment.
Unfortunately there was damage and items missing from the house when staff arrived to clean so accordingly we charged these items to the security deposit and returned the balance.
If the group would like to answer our attempts to contact them I am sure we can resolve this issue.

"Say bye bye to your deposit"

Only in the very rarest of occasions do we withhold part of a security deposit and we have never withheld the full amount from any guest. We accept that wear and tear are part of the business and minor breakages are routine for our maintenance team.
We did not as stated withhold all of the security deposit we only retained the amount required to cover the damage and replacements.
This customer left the house in a condition which required additional cleaning also there were missing items as well as the broken bed.
The customer made no attempt to contact us until we informed him were withholding part of his deposit. All our guests have the benefit of a 24hr maintenance line this number is displayed throughout the house and on all booking information, where any issues like the WiFi or broken bed can be reported for our immediate attention.
The downside of being located out in the open countryside with its beautiful views is we are a little remote for high internet speed and maybe this was the issue?
