The South/Borders region
There are endless things to do from this wonderful corner of Scotland - not only in East Lothian but also in the Borders and north Northumberland. Oldhamstocks Cottage is just three miles from the coast, thereby giving access to some of the most beautiful sandy beaches of East Lothian, Berwickshire and north Northumberland.
Within 30 minutes there are 19 golf courses catering for golfers of all standards and tastes. Some of these are world renowned: North Berwick, Gullane, Dunbar and The Open Championship course at Muirfield (25 minutes).
If golf's not your cup of 'tee' then feast on the following:
Edinburgh: one of the finest cities in Europe (35 minutes away) with Edinburgh Castle and the various galleries and museums, not forgetting the beautiful Botanical Gardens and of course The Royal Yacht Britannia. In July and August the city plays host to the International and the Fringe Festivals as well as the Grand Military Tattoo at Edinburgh Castle.
~ North Berwick, Tantallon Castle, The Scottish Seabird Centre and the Bass Rock are within 25 minutes. ~ Museums galore including Concorde at the Museum of Flight (20 minutes) ~ Kelso and Floors Castle (40 minutes) ~ Scuba diving and delicious seafood at St. Abbs Head and Eyemouth (20 minutes) ~ Berwick upon Tweed (25 minutes), Haddington (20 minutes) and Dunbar (12 minutes) ~ Lindisfarne Priory and Bamburgh Castle (45 minutes) ~ Alnwick Castle and its world famous gardens (55 minutes) ~ Local fishing, riding, cycling, swimming and sailing galore. ~ The Southern Upland Way - surely one of Britain's best kept secrets - starts/finishes in the next door village of Cockburnspath, making Oldhamstocks a fantastic base for a genuinely superb walking holiday.
Cockburnspath / Oldhamstocks area
The name ‘Oldhamstocks’ (pronounced Oldhamstocks) is said to have come from an Anglo-Saxon source: ‘Ald ham stoc’ which means an old home or dwelling. The alternative theory is that it comes from the Gaelic ‘Altan’ and ‘Stotan’ meaning a small burn and tree trunks.
Oldhamstocks is said to be one of East Lothian’s ‘hidden villages’ and certainly that is the impression given as you reach the Cocket Hat at the top of the Smiddy Brae and wonder where the village is.
The village consists of a single row of houses and at its West end, grouped round the green, are the former school and schoolhouse, the parish church and its manse, the market cross and a stone well for drinking water. The village smithy remains at the East end and the corn mill, now a house, is down by the burn. The site of the former inn, where Cromwell stayed, is still to be seen on the south side of the village where the old road from the South entered over Berwick Bridge.
East Lothian and the Borders have much to offer in the culture department. If we can't provide it locally, the chances are that what you're after is within a short distance in the Borders or other close lying parts of Fife, the Lothians or North Northumberland.
Other places to go and activities include:
Endless beautiful sandy beaches and surf lessons available at Belhaven Beach in the summer months Archery at the Scottish Archery Centre at Fenton Barns Cycling Fresh Water and Sea Fishing Horse Riding Walking - Coastal walks and the Southern Upland Way
Belhaven Brewery, Dunbar (tours of Scotland's oldest surviving brewery dating back to 1719) Glenkinchie Distillery, Pencaitland Raceland Karting
Castles and Historic Houses - Edinburgh Castle, Bamburgh Castle, Dirleton Castle and Gardens, Tantallon Castle, Lennoxlove House Churches - St Mary's Collegiate Church, Haddington, Seton Collegiate Church, Cockenzie Gardens - Inveresk Lodge Garden, Preston Tower and Gardens Museums/Galleries - The Museum of Scotland, various art galleries in Edinburgh, The Heritage Golf Museum, Myreton Motor Museum, Prestongrange Industrial Heritage Museum, John Muir House (John Muir's birthplace)
