The Scottish Borders region

Heather Heugh (Cove Harbour) is at the edge of the Lothians/Scottish Borders. It is 35 miles south of Edinburgh and 22 miles north of Berwick.

The whole area is rich in history and landscape, with many well known (and less well known) places to see. Cockburnspath is the start of the Southern Upland Way.

Cockburnspath

There are many local amenities - restaurants, towns and villages (Eyemouth, St Abbs, Dunbar etc), famous country houses, walks etc.

Also there is many activities available such as golfing, painting, bird-watching, surfing, sea angling, exploring the richness of the area and relaxation.

There are innumerable excellent local walks all around, inland and along the coast, including a trail of memorials to the 1881 East Coast Fishing Disaster. Cove is also at the end of the Southern Upland Way

"Horrible.."

I blame myself.I booked via the HolidayLettings arm of TripAdvisor and didn't read the reviews... at this time there are 10 on here for this property and with 2 giving a damning report. Heather O… More

This is a strange review. I actually cleaned the house myself so I know that the state it was left in was good. They made a last minute booking. When they arrived, they phoned to say that they didn't want to stay there -so I actually gave them most of their money back. Having then stayed longer on the house than they then said, they left quite a large telephone bill. They were trouble.

Thanks for the comments. Just to make it clear though, that when keys are picked up, there is a key to the gate of the private road. This allows a car to come much closer to the house for luggage, provisions etc

"A magical weekend in an enchanting , secret setting . Perfect !"

The magic starts on the walk down the cliff path, through the smugglers tunnel cut into the rock ,then your first glimpse of the tiny harbour, deserted , sandy beach and the sea on your doorstep .
Whether a romantic break or a family holiday ,this location cannot be beaten.
The house itself is quirky in the best possible way and has all the facilities you need for a stress free, comfortable stay.
A truly unforgettable visit to Cove harbour and I cant wait to return .
Book it now before word gets out !

"What a waste"

Fantastic location, and that is the only good thing I can say. House in very poor state of repair. Shower did not work, oven door would not close, most of radiators don't work. Appalling smell in kitchen and a huge pile of rubbish sacks stored right next to the house. Booked for a week but left after 4 days. Contacted owner who promised to get back to us when he had visited house, but guess what.....no contact other than a refund of £100 for our trouble. Run a mile!

After I heard about these issues, I closed the house for 3 weeks for urgent review and maintenance check:
1. Electric shower was being fixed at the time of the visit in question but it needed a complete new unit. A top of the range shower has been fitted (although there are 2 showers in the house).
2. Previous guests had left rubbish by the side of the house. This has all been cleared away.
3. Radiators and over have been reviewed by an electrician and fixed.
4. House has been repainted where required.
Cove is a beautiful place to visit and my aim is to make my guests visits as enjoyable as possible. The house has been very well renovated but I believe that we slipped up here and I'm not going to deny it. In the future, guests will have telephone numbers to call for cleaning or maintenance services if there is any problem I will also personally look for feedback from guests and ensure the highest standards.
This is not something that I am proud of since Heather Heugh is my second home and I want it to be right for anybody staying.
Notwithstanding the above, the previous visitor did email me with the following comment:
"Just a quick note to say that we thoroughly enjoyed our stay in your cottage at the end of March. The cottage and the harbour were magical and just what we needed ... We would love to come back. Our daughter stated that it was "the most beautiful beach in the world" ! "

"Very cosy cottage situated in the most unique setting we have ever holidayed at. Simply perfect and idyllic!"

Gorgeous cottage situated literally on the beach in picturesque Cove Harbour, just next to Cockburnspath in the Scottish Borders.

Fantastic if you want to escape city living for a while and enjoy the tranquility of being so close to the sea. Access to the house is on foot, through a tunnel in the hill and across the beach, so if it's a secluded getaway in a unrivalled beautiful Scottish setting that you are after, Heather Heugh Cottage is ideal!

Great in the summer for outdoor activities and dining al fresco in the front garden, and equally pleasant in the winter, curled up on the sofa in front of the fire with a good book for company.

Can't recommend it more! Dog friendly, too, which is a must for us as we travel everywhere with our dog.
