The County Cork region
Cork harbour is one of the worlds largest natural harbours and is a busy shipping port accomodating both freight ships and cruise liners alike.
COBH: A picturesque island situated on the far south of the country is definitely a place to visit. Its refreshing sea breezes, warmed by the Gulf Stream, and friendly atmosphere are natural like the harbour that surrounds it. Catering for all ages, there is a variety of things to do and places to visit. For the energetic visitor activities such as golfing, sailing, fishing, cycling, walking are available. Others will prefer to just sit on the deck and take in the beautiful views, watching the ships sail by.
Cobh area
As well as activities such as golfing, sailing and fishing, Cobh town boasts a leisure centre with swimming pool and gym. Also there are plenty of gentler days out very close by such as a walk round Fota House and Gardens or a trip to see the animals at Fota wildlife park. On a good day it is possible to see the giraffes from the road off the island- I often wonder what visitors who are unaware of the wildlife park's existence must think of this! (St Patrick may have driven the snakes out of Ireland but how could he miss the giraffes?!)
There are boat tours round the harbour to be caught in town and the heritage centre is a must for those interested in the history of the area. The Titanic sailed from here on it's ill-fated journey and the Lusitania's survivors were brought back here, and many of it's dead buried here.
Cork city is close by with its own unique history and great nightlife and is easily accessed by rail if you don't fancy the bother of parking.
