The Byre is set amidst fields and hills, once part of the famous Baskerville Estate. The barn has retained its original oak beams and has been restored sympathetically to reflect its 300 year history. The Welsh Oak kitchen- hand made by a local craftsman- is well equipped with granite sinks and worktops, fridge, electric oven and hob. The cosy shower room has a heated towel rail as well as bath robes. The locally hand made Welsh Walnut bed has an organic cotton and wool mattress as well as a Welsh Wool Duvet. The beautiful oak wardrobe is craftsman made with local timbers. As well as a welcome pack we provide all essential staples for the kitchen and our own fresh herbs when in season. We also provide a free laundry service.
The Byre is stocked with books and DVDS and we can provide local maps for walking and lots of ideas for places to visit! Bikes- and horses- can be hired locally and fishing on the Wye as well as kayaking prove to be very popular with guests. On arrival- in the cooler months- you will find the log stove lit, and The Byre will be cosy and welcoming for your stay. There is always a home made cake to tuck into or we can provide canapes for special occasions. Our welcome pack ensures you'll have enough for your first breakfast at least- we can even tell you which hens have laid your eggs!- and whenever possible all our produce is local, including bacon, and Steve makes the bread too!
If it is a special weekend (we have had three proposals of marriage here! ) let us know. The champagne will be chilled and the lights will be low. We are nearby should you need us but we will always respect your privacy. Read our reviews- our guests think we are really special. I AM SORRY BUT WE ARE ALREADY FULLY BOOKED FOR HAY FESTIVAL 2016!

If you are a keen horse rider we can arrange riding locally for you or suggest where you might try out canoeing or kayaking.
The views across our valley are glorious so you may want to just relax and chill out- but for the more energetic there is fabulous walking close by- Offa's Dyke path is of course a favourite- whilst the Black Mountains and Brecon Beacons are just a short drive away.
We have been voted in the top 40 of cottages throughout Wales as well as receiving the Certificate of Excellence 2014 from Trip Advisor- and we are constantly working hard to ensure we stay there! So why not join us and see why all our guests award us with five stars!
We can provide maps, lots of advice about the local area, suggestions for eating out- or we can book a local restaurant on your behalf.
The Powys region
The Welsh Borders has a rich history. Clyro was a popular stopping off place for drovers moving cattle and sheep from Wales to England. The Brecon Beacons and Black Mountains were used predominantly by hill farmers and sheep and wild ponies were kept on the hillsides for centuries. Today, the area is a very popular tourist area, especially for walkers, cyclists, canoeists, climbers and people who love the outdoors. The scenery is very varied with towering mountains, glorious valleys hugging the Wye River and interesting villages such as Hay on Wye, of course, famous for its many bookshops, but also English villages close by, built in Tudor times, with superb oak framed houses.
Hay is small with only 1,500 people- but it has a big heart! There is a superb weekly market, fabulous food and clothes shops and, of course, amazing bookshops. There are often concerts held in Booths Bookshop, for example- and everyone flocks to us for the fabulous Hay Festival. There's a great castle and we also have a cinema! There are numerous places to eat in Hay itself but also in Clyro and Painscastle- and there are several Michelin starred restaurants within reasonable driving distance. Clyro is a hamlet but still has a shop, a pub and a good garage- you can buy everything you need locally! We have three food festivals a year- so marvellous for foodies. If you enjoy Jazz, check out the Brecon Jazz Festival- probably one of the best in the world!
Hay is simply a great place- don't take our word for it. Come and see for yourselves!

"So good, that we want to come back"
Michele and Steve made us very welcome at The Byre, which is very well equipped and situated in a wonderful landscape. Michele also provided us with goodies like a welcome cake, home-produced eggs, bacon, home-made bread .... Much more than one would normally expect. Nearby (5 minutes' drive) are The Begwns, a fantastic hill and heather landscape for beautiful walks, Hay on Wye (10 minutes' drive) has the highest concentration of bookshops per square meter, and plenty to explore along Offa's Dyke and the Brecon Beacons. We had a wonderful time and can only recommend it.
Thank you both for your lovely review! We would really love to see you both again before too long. Cake awaits!!

A lovely cottage with everything you need for a break. Brilliant location with many places to explore. Gorgeous cottage and the owners are so lovely and provided us with milk, eggs, bacon, homemade cake and bread. The layout of the cottage is just superb and beautifully decorated with lovely home furnishings. Did not want to leave such a peaceful setting.
We hope The Byre provided you with the peace and rest you deserved and needed. We admire anyone who manages to keep a dairy herd- such hard work. We do hope you will return. All the very best to you both. Warmest wishes.

"A perfect place to stay"
Staying in the Byre for my birthday was all I had hoped for. The food hamper was amazing and the Byre just as described. The conservatory was our favourite place to sit enjoying the views and planning our next walk. There were just too many great walks and places to visit in the 6 days we were there. Thank you Michele & Steve.
Thank you for your lovely review. We are so glad you enjoyed your stay and we really do look forward to welcoming you again. Warmest wishes to you both.

"The Perfect Weekend Retreat"
The Byre was absolutely everything we were hoping for. It's a beautifully restored and furnished property in a wonderfully peaceful setting. The owners had though of everything and we were particularly grateful for the delicious welcome basket which seemed particularly generous, as we were only staying for two nights. We were looking for peace and quiet in a beautiful environment and that's just what we got. The owners were extremely welcoming and helpful whilst giving us all the peace and privacy we were looking for. We will definitely be back!
We look forward very much to your return visit! Cake awaits!

"Wonderful location, incredible house, lovely people!"
Well not sure where to start. Booked this last minute as another place in Hay lied about having an open fire. So not off to a great start, but this place really pulled through for me. I was surprising my partner for her Birthday and was looking for a place where if we got snowed in it would not matter. A place near the lovely black mountains and Hay on Wye but out of the way. A place with character and history but clean, minimal and homely. Well this place blew us away! We got there late on friday night and Michelle and Steve were there to meet us, we had a lovely chat and got settled. Once we walked in my partners face said it all. It was a warm, pretty converted goat barn with a roaring fire, a basket full of homemade goods, a comfy bed and big sofas with open beams and oak furniture everywhere. After getting settled in, we cooked in the nice little kitchen and eat dinner out in the romantic conservatory with the sky clear as anything. As the weekend went on it got better and better, sat in front of the fire place and enjoying the peace and tranquility of the countryside. The hosts could not be more helpful with even Steve offering us a lift into Hay on Wye so that we could have a glass of wine with our dinner and not have to worry about the 5 min drive. Just perfect!! We will be back.
I am sorry that circumstances meant I could not say good bye and thank you to you both for being the perfect guests but you were so lovely. I do hope to see you again in the warmer months. Best wishes to you both.

"Homely tranquility in beautiful rural setting"
This is our second stay at this exceptional, beautifully converted "Byre". Exceedingly comfortable, very well equipped with fabulous attention to detail. The Byre is charming place to stay in a quiet, rural location with easy access to Hay on Wye and surrounding National Trust and National Park landscape. Michelle and Steve are wonderful hosts, where nothing is too much trouble and who always ensure our stay creates fond memories.
It was lovely to welcome you back to The Byre- we feel you are two of our most special guests and we treasure our memories of your visit. Thank you for your comments- our 50 th 5 star review!

This beautiful 300 year old Byre is resorted beautifully but still retains it character. However it is the added extras, which make this a stay to remember. It is outstanding value for money in a very pretty location, which I would recommend to anyone.
Thank you for your lovely comments- we would love to welcome you back if (or hopefully when) you return to Wales! Warmest wishes to you both!

"Felt like Home"
The only unfortunate thing was the fact that we were only able to stay for 2 nights. There is one way that I can best make the point as to how great "The Byre" is. On our last night we went to The Radnor Arms for a meal as recommended by our hosts. When we returned after a lovely evening we walked through the door & said to each other "It's great to be home" !!!!! That sums it up. Superb accommodation & Steve & Michele are superb hosts.
Thank you once again for choosing us. You were lovely guests and when we met you for the first time, we felt like we were greeting old friends- so we really do hope to see you again! Warmest wishes to you both.

"A fabulous hideaway to suit all needs"
The Byre is an exceptionally comfortable place with a lovely ambience. Upon arrival, one is met with a warm welcome and a generous selection of local and homemade treats. After settling in to the semi-open plan living space (which is furnished in welsh timbers), we let the stresses of modern life ebb away over a cup of tea in the garden. There is a charming view across the valley, where farm animals and birds roam carefree. The Byre has all modern conveniences, and we found cooking meals very enjoyable: the conservatory makes an excellent dining room. We are resolved to return in deep winter, for an excuse to use the log burner! The Byre benefits from a very rare combination: it is secluded, but very close to a ample range of activities. One could easily while away a week there, reading and lounging with a glass of wine. For the more adventurous, there is fine walking to be had in the Black Mountains and in the Brecon Beacons. Views of the peaks may be had from rewarding routes starting only a few minutes from the Byre itself. We can recommend the Cat's Back walk (your hosts will advise you); canoeing down the river Wye; a coffee at Booth's books; and a pint at the Globe and Blue Boar pubs in Hay.
Gosh- what a detailed review! Thank you so much for choosing to stay at The Byre. It was lovely to meet you both and we very much hope that you will indeed choose to return in the winter when you can be sure of a very warm welcome and a cosy stove! Warmest wishes to you both!
