The Galway / County Clare / County Galway region
Galway is a large county divided into two contrasting regions by the expanse of Lough Corrib.
To the west, lying between the lake and the Atlantic, is Connemara - a region of superb scenic grandeur dominated by the rocky mountain range known as the Twelve Pins. A great many of the inhabitants are Irish speakers, and much of the ancient Gaelic culture is preserved.
Clonbur / Tumneenaune area
The village of Clonbur is snugly situated between Loch Corrib and Loch Mask. One mile to the west rises the majestic and storied Mount Gable where, according to legend, the hordes of Firbolg assembled on the summit before their confrontation with the Tuatha De Dannann at the Battle of Moytura.
In less ancient times this isthmus became known as the Gap of Danger where the ‘plainsmen’ met the less sophisticated, but often more stubborn stock of Joyce and Flaherty country. Here was the stage where conflicting civilisations rubbed shoulders, and often swords. Today the district of Clonbur is endowed with nature’s choicest gifts – mountains, lakes, streams and woodlands.
Mount Gable offers the visitor who likes an easy climb a panoramic view of breath-taking beauty. The lakes need no introduction to discerning anglers from these islands and the continent. At present, with the co-operation of the Forestry Division of the Department of Lands, forest walks of scenic interest are being developed. Here one can rest, stroll or picnic in a friendly and picturesque environment or visit the ruins on the Petersburg Estate, seat of the Lynch family, one of whose members – John Lynch – was a signatory of the American Declaration of Independence.
