Home description

Ballard, near the village of Clonbur (Irish - An Fhairche) is in part of the Gaeltacht or Irish-speaking region of North Connemara. Located between Loughs Corrib and Mask, this region is endowed with lakes, streams, mountains and woodlands.

Lough Corrib and Lough Mask have earned worldwide recognition from anglers and fishermen and Ballard is centrally located for both lakes. Explore the lakeshores, take a cruise, visit the numerous islands on Lough Corrib - "there is one for every day of the year". If you're feeling adventurous, Petersburgh Activity Centre on Lough Mask offers sailing, windsurfing, kayaking and caving.

Hillwalkers of all ability will enjoy access to walks on Mount Gable or to trails on the Partry Mountains and Connemara. Cyclists can skirt the lakes or choose a lower gear and tackle the quiet routes through the hills.

The Galway / County Clare / County Galway region

Clonbur, in the heart of Connemara (Joyce Country) is renowned for its mountains, lakes, woodlands, and wonderful family walks.

Clonbur is located between Lough Corrib and Lough Mask both of which are remowed top class angling lakes.
These fresh water lakes provide excellent swimming amenities, and the opportunities to visit many of their islands.

The nearby Mount Gable offers those who like to strole an easy climb and a panoramic view with breath-taking beauty. On a clear day one can view Clare, Mayo and the Connemara Mountains from its easily accessible summit. A great place for hill walkers both amature and those more adept.

For those seeking outdoor pursites the nearby Petersburg Outdoor Centre offers windsurfing, canoeing, pot-holing, abseiling and also local nature trails, while a short drive away (30 mins) Delphi Adventure Centre/ Lodge Spa offers a range of outdoor sports including sea-kayaking, surfing, diving, mountain biking, rock-climbing and a range of other activities.


Clonbur / Ballard area

The townland of Ballard is 2 miles from the charming village of Clonbur. The people of Clonbur are very friendly and welcoming. You will find a well stocked supermarket, a post office and 3 pubs (two with restaurants) to entertain you and your family/group.

Adjacent to the village, Clonbur Woods offers woodland and lakeside walks. A 7 mins drive to Cong Village (home of the "Quite Man" Movie) is the publically accessible grounds and estate of Ashford Castle.

Other towns within 30 minutes drive include Galway City, Westport, Castlebar, Leenaun and Roundstone. Connemara beaches such as Leitirgeish and Glaslaun are 40 minutes drive.

Knock International Airport, catering for scheduled daily flights to and from many destinations (London*3, Manchester, Bristol, East Midlands, Birmingham, Glasgow), is only 40 miles away, while Galway Airport is approx 35 miles.

It is 155 miles from Dublin (Airport, or ferry to Dublin Port or Dun Laoghaire). The drive time is approximately 3.5 hours. The route is simple with motorway driving until the midlands, then national route until Galway city, and heading north via Headford and Cong to Clonbur and onto Ballard.
