About this location
The Western Ireland region
Galway is a large county divided into two large contrasting regions by the expanse of Lough Corrib, to the west, lying between the lake and the Atlantic, is Connemara. Connemara is stunning and there is a fantastic Connemara Heritage Centre with a Pre Famine homestead of Dan O'Hara. Galway east, or East of Lough Corrib, is fertile limestone and extends to Roscommon.
Cornamona is in part of the Gaelteacht or Irish-speaking region of North Connemara. This village is one of the major centres for trout and salmon angling on the northern shores of Lough Corrib. There are large pike to be caught here, as is evidenced by the one exhibited in the local pub. Most of the larger islands on the Corrib, including Inchagoill, lie directly south-east of the Doorus Peninsula on which Cornamona is situated.
Mount Gable lies just 2 km to the east, and is an easy climb of about one hour’s duration. The effort is worthwhile because the views of Lough Corrib, stretching away to the south, Lough Mask to the north and the Connemara mountains to the west, are simply stupendous.
Cornamona sits between Lough Mask and Lough Corrib and is the perfect spot for touring both and also for heading into the west - through the mountains to the sandy beaches of the Atlantic coast. This is a fabulous fishing area making the area a fishermans dream . Also a great walking area and offers holidaymakers an ideal relaxing break.
