Further details indoors:
Everything has been finished to a very high standard. The house was, until recently, the owners home and consequently has been equipped with high quality products not normally associated with holiday homes( for example Bosch American style fridge/freezer, a further freezer,Miele dishwasher, gorgeous gas range cooker, bosch washing machine etc).
Further to the list above there is a study, a large utility room and another wc downstairs. Bathrooms are a feature of this house:the master bedroom has a beautiful ultra modern wet room en-suite, and the main family bathroom is fitted with a very large bath and a large(1m) hans grohe shower unit.
Further details outdoors:
KIlkern is situated In over an acre of land which is bisected by a rocky outcrop on which grow some fairly exotic species. A lawned area to the front of the house gives rise to a field which leads to a raised gravelled area offering views to the galley head lighthouse and the Atlantic Ocean. The field provides an excellent area for ball games. Walking around(or clambering over!) the rocky outcrop one finds a small group of semi-ruined dwellings which further add to the character and mystery of the place.

BookThe County Cork region
Kilkern is ideally situated to explore two of Ireland's most beautiful counties, Cork and Kerry. Kerry is famous for it's magnificent scenery :the rugged Dingle Peninsula, the Ring of Kerry -offering unrivalled mountain panoramas- and the National Park and Lakes of Killarney. County Cork offers a gentle, magical experience, from it's numerous pretty fishing villages and sandy beaches which line an unspoilt coastline to the friendly bustle of Cork City.
Evidence of a rich cultural heritage is all around, from the innumerable ancient stone circles and ring forts to the more recent ruins of abbeys, churches and great houses.
The climate is surprisingly mild due to the Gulf Stream which insulates this corner of Ireland. Combined with the thermal properties of the underlying rocky terrain, this serves to support a great variety of exotic flora originating from distant lands. The Fushia hedgerows of West Cork are a prime example.
The Clonakilty area
Just one mile away is the pretty village of Rathbarry, proud winner on several occasions of National awards. It offers a Post Office/general store, a charming museum of local history and a pub. There are numerous woodland and lakeside walks which may be started in the village, taking in gorgeous views of this gentle coastline.
The charming village of Roscarberry, somewhat larger than Rathbarry, is 3 miles distant, and the town of Clonakilty lies 5 miles away. This is a local gem of a place and has recently(December 2011) become Ireland's first town to win the prestigious global accolade as a Cittaslow(literally "slow city") destination. It joins 42 towns in 24 countries worldwide whose goal is to enhance the quality of life for residents and visitors alike. Clonakilty has a farmers' market and many first class shops and restaurants; the use of locally grown quality fresh food has become a trademark of this town. It offers a vibrant music scene from the traditional to modern; of particular note is Debarras pub which continues to attract internationally renowned and locally respected musicians alike. The annual guitar festival is not to be missed.
But perhaps foremost in the holiday-maker's mind will be the beaches. The Blue Flag beach at Inchydoney is approx 5 miles away. It is family-friendly and boasts a fine restaurant and spa in the local hotel. Surfing lessons for beginners are a favourite. The Long Strand beach is 1.5 miles of golden sand just 1 mile away from Kilkern, and offers surfing for the more experienced followers, and lovely walks. Red Strand, close to the Galley head Lighthouse, is a tranquil sandy bay suitable for the whole family and extremely popular with local residents.Warren Strand is another Blue Flag beach and is 3 miles away near Roscarberry village. Here there is safe bathing for the family and many rock pools.
Other water-based activities pursued in the area include kayaking( there are many so many tiny coves to explore),Whale and dolphin watching, Scuba Diving and of course, fishing.
And for those with a preference for terra firma there are miles of boreens to explore by bicycle or on foot.
Golf is a popular pursuit and there is a delightful course at Lisselan Gardens some 20 minutes drive away.

Kilkern is traditional farmhouse stylishly extended and modernised to a very high standard. It is a charming property with every modern convenience and a lot of space both inside and out. We found it suited our family - with 4 young children - very well. Inside, the kitchen and bathrooms (all 4) are particularly well appointed. The kitchen is as well equipped as any family home making self-catering very straightforward. On the cooler evenings we enjoyed lightlng the traditional stove in the living room. The house offers broadband and satillite TV. However there is currently no mobile coverage (which might be an advantage?) The piano makes Kilkern feel like a home! Beds were all extremely comfortable. The main bathrooms were five star hotel standard. The house generally was spotless when we arrived. The gardens are big and offer lots of room for children to explore. The house is rural and surrounded by working farms (we had a tour of both which the children loved). We fed the pigs in the neighbours organic farm! Red Strand is a beautiful beach about 5 minutes drive away. This house is remote and you will need a car to get around. We wanted a tranquil setting with lots of room and a high standard of accommodation within distance of Clonakilty and beautiful West Cork. Kilkern did not disappoint. |
