Little Loft is set in a stunning landscape on the English side of the Welsh Border.. The view from the bedroom window flows down to the Monnow River at the bottom of the valley before sweeping up to the mountain ridge that bisects the landscape. This ridge is part of the long distance Offa's Dyke walk and its summit separates the pastoral hedge lined meadows of England from the more mysterious rolling wildness of the Black Mountains in Wales.

It is a magical borderland, dotted with ruined castles, abbeys, and ancient churches, a spot for lovers of nature, for doers and explorers, and for dreamers and thinkers.

Little Loft is a studio apartment in the apex of an oak framed barn, built in 2007. It has its own access up a garden stone staircase. A rocky stream flows down a gully through the gardens and separates The Loft from the main house, thus providing privacy. An oak framed bridge provides another access. The loft has its own private elevated garden and a small, decked terrace built over the roof of a small house—a 'des-res' for Lesser-horseshoe bats. This terrace leads into Little Loft via a lobby, which opens on to a simply furnished space with a bamboo floor. It has a very comfortable twin or king-sized bed, a well-equipped kitchenette (with steamer, microwave, toaster, kettle, and Foreman grill, slow cooker/fryer, but no hob or oven), and separate modern shower room. There's free broadband available.

Little Loft is most suitable for two people, but could accommodate an extra adult or two children.

There are many great options for dining out, and within walking distance there are 3 pubs, two of which have restaurants.

There's no best time to visit; Spring, summer and early autumn are all festival times in the market towns. May brings the Hay on Wye literary festival; August, Brecon Jazz; and September the Abergavenny Food Festival.

We started letting Little Loft in the Spring of last year and found it a very pleasant experience, with very pleasant, interesting guests, who in turn seemed to enjoy what was on offer.

"Wonderful quirky place to stay"

The Little Loft is really nice. Our hosts left us milk, butter, tea and coffee and came later with home made bread!!You do need a car here. Walks from the property aren't too easy but the posit… More

Thanks ladies for your kind review - you were lovely guests to have in Little Loft and so appreciative. Your comments have both clarified, and provided me with an opportunity to explain what the walking is like here.

I guess, because we're in a mountain valley and the walk that takes you up on to the ridge (Offas Dyke pathway) and over to Llanthony Priory (it can be done in about 90 minutes) is a moderate to steep climb, it won't suit everybody: That said we often take quite young children over (my son took his two over to LLanthony show last weekend) and the joy of the climb is often met with exuberance at the top, before of course the descent. The marked footpaths are reached by walking either up and down our lane (about 1/2 a mile in either direction) and one takes you through meadows and another tracks the river Monnow on the valley floor so both are easier walking than the path onto the ridge itself, from where you can walk to Hay in a few hours, if you wish.

Of course you're right about needing a car and that I think would be the case for most people, who want to explore further afield, but we have picked up folk, from Abergavenny Station (20 minutes away) who want to do some wild walking. In this case not being reliant on a car seems to them a positive bonus, especially since our wonderful village shop and pubs are within easy walking or cycling distance.

Thanks again ladies for your lovely and helpful feedback and I think I understand what you mean, there aren't forest trails directly from Little Loft without walking the lane a little way first. There are some good local OS maps in the studio.
