The Brittany region

Brittany, though it is part of France, it has its own identity. It has strong celtic influences, in its culture, the music.. It is rural, without being isolated. Pontivy is the main town, with its chateau and historical buildings. The canal runs through the town, and the main street has pretty small shops and restaurants. The villages are pretty.. Cleguerec has a good mix of shops for food and small restaurant/bars. There are frequent events at Cleguerec, the main festival is in May, when groups are invited to play from round the world. , St Aignan has a bar/creperie, and sits next to the Nantes Brest canal.. there is a small electricity museum which is, well, quirky. In fact, that maybe said about a lot of places and things here! It has a feel of Britain maybe 30-40 years ago. But the roads are excellent, and no toll roads which is a bonus!

The area is pretty with its green, rolling countryside, large forests, huge lake (Guerledan lake) and the Nantes-Brest canal. The road system is superb, with easy access to both the north and south coast about an hour away. There are many attractive villages nearby, with their granite longeres (long farm houses) and potager gardens. Throughout the year there are events, usually free. It isn't a tourist area, so the area doesn't seem to get overcrowded in summer, There is a lovely sunday market at bon repos. The bar has music playing, it is lovely sat on the terrrace in the sunshine, and the food is nice and not expensive. With the view over to the Abbaye, the setting is perfect! although there are more outdoor events in July and August. Music is always around, any excuse to sing and dance! So there are often outdoor Breton dance displays, or there are festivals for jazz, world music.. but above all.. Celtic! In august there is the Interceltique at Lorient, the chants du marins with its sea shanties at Paimpol or Brest.. the local Son et Lumiere at Bon Repos is an outdoor spectacle with over 400 actors (human and animal!) It is very much an outdoor place, so eating outside is a pleasure.. and walking, cycling, water sports are very popular. You can swim in the lake, and also hire pedaloes and canoes nearby (6km), Anse du Sordan) The climate here is similar to the UK, but is usually warmer. The locals are friendly, and those who do speak english do love to practise it.. It is an agricultural area, with maritime influences .. sea food is important here. The local specialties are cider and crepes. There are festivals to celebrate the food, and there is a lovely one in Guemene sur Scorff for the Andouille (sausage festival) when the town has stages with dancers in costume, bands march through the streets.. there are so many.. really you have to come and discover them??

"Simple charm, stunning view"

The cottage is in a beautiful location, we stayed with two dogs and the walking was literally just across the road, through miles of forest. The upside down accommodation makes best use of the amazing view over the valley. The gite is quite simply appointed but had everything we needed for a get-away-from-it-all stay and had a really comfortable bed. Eve was a perfect host, really helpful with information and lending us a free phone as we are buying a house and needed to make quite a few calls. The WiFi worked well. Also, her information sheets were really useful. I would thoroughly recommend this gite to anyone wanting peace and quiet which even the pouring rain couldn't spoil. We had a short visit with a lot of appointments booked and weren't really able to explore the area well, although saw the lake, which is beautiful and the abbaye which looked really interesting and is very close by. We will be returning to them on our next visit.
