There are glorious views from Villa Charmante over the perched medieval village of Claviers, in Provence, to the hills beyond. It is totally private and secluded - no other property overlooks the Provence villa, terrace or pool as we have olive groves to one side and to the rear, a small wood to the other side, and to the front (south and south west) we look down on Claviers with its 900 year old church.
Villa Charmante is a modern villa built using many traditional materials such as ancient oak beams, terracotta tiles, handmade local bathroom tiles from Salernes and antique doors, to mention just a few of the delights of the property. The inside is stunning with large windows and high ceilings allowing plenty of light to bathe the spacious 175 sqm house. It is a villa of great charm and character with all modern conveniences.

The Provence region
With a Mediterranean climate of long hot summers and 300 sunny days a year, you can spend long lazy days beside the pool relaxing and unwinding in the warm sunshine.
Sandy beaches at Frejus and St Maxime 40 minutes drive. There are many other sandy bays and coves within 1 hour and the beautiful 7 km long Pampelonne beach at St Tropez is about a 1 hour drive.
Discover many pretty medieval perched villages such as Tour Tour and Chateaudouble in the hills nearby or Eze high above Nice.
Many of the famous resorts of the Cote d'Azur such as Cannes, Nice, Monaco and Monte Carlo are all easily accessible from the villa. Our favourite is St Tropez, this is an absolute "must" visit, a beautiful old town with chic designer shops, magnificent yachts in the harbour and great for "people watching" .
There are several golf courses within 1 hour which as you would expect of the South of France are truly spectacular.
Two hours away are the magnificent Roman ruins at Avignon, Orange, Nimes and the stunning Pont du Gard aqueduct.
Skiing - there is a small skiing resort 45 minutes from Villa Charmante open in mid winter or the main resorts of the Alps are a 2 hour drive.
The Cote d'Azur and South of France have long had a special appeal. Combine the Mediterranean climate, wonderful light, Provencal cooking, superb wine and the rich warm scenes that inspired Van Gogh and Cezanne and you have all the makings for a fantastic holiday!
Take a pleasant few minutes' stroll in the early morning sunshine to the village bakery for your freshly baked bread and croissants for breakfast.
Historic Claviers has a bakery, grocers, post office, restaurants, bar, boules court and market day. Sister villages of Callas and Bargemon (recently voted one of the prettiest villages in France) have more shops, restaurants, cafes, bank, market days etc
The larger towns of Le Muy and Draguignan both 20 minutes away have supermarkets, traditional market days and all other facilities.
The area is popular for rambling with many paths through pine forests and olive groves. Our favourite is the 1 ½ mile walk from the villa to the Chapel of St Anne high on the hill above for magnificent views of Claviers, Callas, Bargemon and the surrounding countryside.
There are excellent local vineyards for wine tasting and essential supplies! Our recommendation Chateau d'Esclans produces some of the best rose you can buy and is one of quite a number of vineyards just 20 minutes away en-route to Le Muy, where you can spend a pleasant afternoon wine tasting. Another of these vineyards, Domaine de la Maurette boasts a superb restaurant serving delicious freshly prepared provençal food where you can choose to dine inside or out.
France's Grand Canyon, the Gorges du Verdon is ½ hour's drive. It is nearly half a mile deep and the many view points make for a fabulous afternoon out.
Lac St Cassien for all watersports is only 25 minutes' drive away. The larger Lac St Croix (also good for watersports) is 45 minutes away at the mouth of the Gorges du Verdon.

We've been drawn back again and again to the Villa Charmante because it richly deserves its name. We instantly feel completely at home there. The beauty of the beamed, spacious and elegantly designed interior, and the idyllic, lavender and pine scented terraces that surround it, with their stunning views over the hills of medieval Claviers, always yield new pleasures with the changing light. The housekeeping and pool maintenance are both of the highest standard. And if you can bear to leave the house, there are many picturesque villages nearby to visit as well as the Cote d'Azur and the magnificent canyons of Verdon.

"A week in the sun"
1 week at Villa Charmante was the perfect break amongst 6 weeks of travelling in Europe. The Villa itself is appointed with all we needed to make it our home away from home, Breakfast on the terrace overlooking Claviers was followed by long swims in the pool and day trips to the many local towns of the area. Coastal cities of Monte Carlo, Nice and Cannes and St Tropez are all within reach for day trips.

"Lovely villa and location"
Lovely villa, set in a great location overlooking Claviers. Very well appointed and equipped property. Lovely pool and surrounds allowing for relaxation and privacy. Close to the coast and Grasse, with local markets adding some local colour, to a villa in which you can absorb the peace and tranquillity of rural Provence. Good local restaurant in Claviers which held our attention on most nights All in all a great week despite the cool Mistral blowing - pity it could not have been longer.

"A magical Provencale Villa Retreat"
We so enjoyed our first visit to the Villa Charmante that we could not resist a second stay. This was equally delightful. The villa, an idyllic, terraced, hillside retreat, overlooking the picturesque medieval village of Claviers, continues to live up to its name. It has many rooms, opening from its spacious, half timbered, three-tiered central area, and a rich variety of views of pine-scented mountains to enchant the eye. The standard of maintenance, of house and swimming pool, is impeccable, and there is always a friendly concierge from the village to offer help if needed - including greeting us with food and drink to welcome our arrival (a welcoming gesture typical of Select Cottages). Lavender, olive trees, oleanders, and a choice of terraces make the villa as beautiful outside as in, and its situation between the seaside attractions of the Cote d'Azur and the spectacular mountains and Gorges of Verdun are ideal for us. Both our holidays here have been magical. We cannot recommend this enchanted place too highly.

"We had a fantastic, relaxing week, just what we needed."
The villa is perfectly positioned - looking over the village on a quiet hillside. There are lovely walks from the door and the village has all you need - a bar, a shop and a nice local restaurant. It was perfect for a really relaxing family holiday - great house, really well equipped and looked after. We had a very mixed bag weather wise and on the cold days, the cosy parlour with wood burning fire was just the job, on the hot days it would have been good to have had the pool to use but we were rather early in the season. We hope to be back to use it !

"Fantastic views in a charming little village in the hills above the Cote d'Azur"
Highlights: Views to die for, charming unspoilt French village located 15 minutes walk from the front door, delicious bakery and Restaurant D'Oliviers in the village, locals extremely friendly and engaging, located amongst fantastic unspoilt countryside with abundant wildlife. Villa generally well appointed, with spacious living areas for children to run around (NB stairs down to kitchen/dining room may not be suitable for toddlers - although a baby gate is provided). Small amount of food and drink provided on arrival - very useful as arrival not before 4pm on Saturday means very few shops open unless shopping carried out on the way to the villa. Very good (cost effective) local rose wine. Lowlights: Pool was very cold at this time of year and not well maintained by the caretaker as promised in the particulars. Details of local attractions in the villa file somewhat out of date. Although the village is small and charming, there is not much to do (particularly for children) - a hire car is essential to reach destinations such as the Verdon Gorge and Marineland (latter well worth a visit with children) - NB if warmer weather had been enjoyed - the pool would negate this problem. Roads to the villa are typically "rural French" and therefore this should be noted when choosing hire vehicle (hairpin bends to the village are the norm). Due to rural location, be aware of "local wildlife" visiting the villa - such as ants and frogs. Summary: We would think twice about the advantage of a pool at this time of year and would delay a visit until it was warm enough for the children to obtain proper use of it. However, this meant we saw a lot of the local attractions and we enjoyed our stay at Villa Charmante immensely. We miss the views even now.
Please note, our our pool is professionally maintained; this particular week was unseasonally cold so the water was checked for quality and pH balance, and all was fine. As the pool had hardly been used there was very little maintenance or cleaning required. The pool is professionally cleaned twice a week in Summer regardless of the weather. There is also a thermal cover for guests to roll on to keep the heat of the day in the pool overnight.

"One of the loveliest, most relaxing holidays we have had."
We had a wonderful holiday in this lovely villa in beautiful Claviers. Standing looking down over this very typical Provence village, Villa Charmante made for a perfect base to explore rural Provence and beyond. The villa was well equipped and comfortable and some days we just stayed in all day relaxing by, and in, the pool. It enjoyed almost all day sunshine. It was located in a very peaceful place but only a 7 minute walk and you were in the centre of Claviers with its perfect mix of bars, restaurants and local stores (including a great boulangerie). One of the best holidays we have had and Villa Charmante couldn't have been a better base to enjoy it from.

"Villa Charmante, Claviers"
Our stay in this Villa was idyllic - there really are fantastic views of the village of Claviers from the Villa to look at other breakfast or dinner. The Villa is in a secluded so offers peace in abundance - however if you want to see the lights, St Tropez, Canne and Nice are all within easy reach.

"A uniquely enchanting villa holiday"
The 'Villa Charmante', an idyllic, terraced, hillside retreat, is set in beautiful olive groves, luxuriant with lavender and humming with cicadas, overlooking the picturesque medieval village of Claviers, perched on its pine-clad ridge of rock across the valley. The villa more than lived up to its name. The spacious rooms and lounges, descended the hillside on three levels, and opened onto a variety of lavender scented terraces where the swimming pool (frequently and discreetly serviced), outdoor barbecue and dining areas were beautifully located. The sunsets over the mountains were magically memorable. The house itself was elegantly furnished with everything you could need, and the charming, friendly and efficient concierge and her handyman husband were always available from the village only minutes away; indeed, they had left welcoming food and drink for our arrival - a characteristically generous gesture from Greg Poole of 'Select Cottages'. We dined splendidly, at reasonable prices, in several local villages and, of course, made the most of this area, poised within easy reach of the beauties of the Cote d'Azur to the south and the spectacular mountains and Gorges of Verdun to the north. Both the villa and our holiday there were uniquely enchanting. We certainly hope to return one day.

"Lovely villa, great location = Happy Holidays!"
We had an excellent week's holiday at the end of May 2011 at the aptly named Villa Charmante. The location is superb tucked away on the hillside among the olive groves a short stroll from the village of Claviers. The views from the pool and terrace down onto the village are superb and it's very hard not to relax when you have surroundings like that. Although not really remote there are no properties very close to the villa so it feels very private and peaceful. We stayed with another couple and found the villa spacious and well appointed. We are keen cooks and found the kitchen equipped with everything we needed and the outdoor barbeque area by the pool was great. The location is good being not too far from many places of interest - if you can drag yourself away from the villa that is! The village of Claviers is quiet with only a few small shops (the essentials of bakers, grocers are there) and a couple of cafe's and restaurants. Larger stores and amendities are within 20-30 mins away. We ate at the Restaurant L'Oliver twice (I think that says everything!) and it was a lovely friendly and welcoming place with excellent food. We really hope to return again because a week simply wasn't long enough to explore all the area has to offer and when we do it will almost definitively be back to Villa Charmante.
