About the home
The Gîte is in the middle of a small French village about an hour south of Poitiers and close to the town of Civray. It was built in the early 1800's as a long barn and it has now been converted into a three bedroom single storey gîte.
The area is in the heart of the tranquil countryside and is ideal for a relaxing holiday. There is still plenty to do and is a good centre from which to explore.
As this is our first year we have special introductory rates.

The lounge/dining room is at the rear of the gîte looking out over the garden. The large double glazed windows on two sides of the room, give plenty of natural light. There is a chestnut floor and large wooden beams. English TV, DVD player and a selection of DVD's, books and games are included. Free wifi is now available.
The fully equipped kitchen area is to one side of the lounge. There are two sinks, a cooker, microwave, fridge and dishwasher. There is a washing machine in the small utility room to the rear of the kitchen. There is plenty of cupboard space and a wine rack!
There is a large double bedroom and two medium sized twin bedrooms, all with en-suite ‘wet room’ bathrooms. Each en-suite has a mixer shower with thermostat, a toilet, basin and heated towel rail. The larger en-suite also has a bath with thermostat taps and hand held shower head.
Further details outdoors:
The Garden
The owners old farm house together with the gîte are on a one hectare (about 2.5 acres) site.
The gîte has its own garden with seats, table, sunbeds and barbeque. The swimming pool is in the main garden area where there is also a large grass area for ball games. There is an outdoor table tennis table and bicycles are also available
Close at hand are the village tennis and boule/petanque courts and this area also has a picnic table and a small, children's play area.
The Pool
The swimming pool can be found just past the end of the gîte garden. It is only shared with the owners. It is approximately 5 by 10 meters and has roman steps one end and a sloping bottom. The depth ranges from 1 to 2 meters.
The pool meets the very strict French safety standards and has a safety cover and pool alarm. It is not at present heated, but the temperature mid summer reaches 28 degrees and is maintained with a thermal cover.
The water is kept pure with bromine, which is much kinder to the skin than chlorine.
Further details
Heating/Air Conditioning
With summers that have reached the upper 30 degrees and winters down to minus 20 degrees, we have given some thought to cooling and heating.
We have installed new technology heat pump air conditioning units, which use the latest eco friendly refrigerant R410a. They are operated with a simple remote control and have a timer function.
Toddler Friendly
We have available a cot, high chairs, push chairs, car seats, a changing table, steriliser and other items for babies and toddlers. There are also garden toys such as a slide and wendy house and many other similar items.
Wheelchair Friendly
During the renovation process we have made sure that the gîte is fully wheelchair friendly. The main access to the gîte is by ramp into the lounge area. All the rooms are on the ground floor and there are no steps or changes in level.
There is a high level electric socket in most rooms and lots in the kitchen area. The kitchen also has a low level, wheelchair accessible sink with a view over the garden.
All the bathrooms are wet rooms with no shower trays. The basins are wall mounted and allow wheelchair access. There are grab rails by the showers and toilets. A wheelchair and an electric scooter are available, as are a walking frame, toilet frame, raised toilet seat etc.
The Poitou-Charentes / Vendee / Vienne region

We have the benefit of a special climate region, based on La Rochelle, with less rain and warmer temperatures than the rest of central France.
The beautiful countryside is calm and tranquil but still with plenty to do. From the local markets, bags of roman heritage, wonderful food and wine to Monkey world, Futuroscope, Puy du Fou and many others. Full details can be found on our website.
The Civray / St Gaudent area
The nearest local town is Civray, about 5 minutes by car which is an old town on the river Charante. The roman church in the town is one of the oldest in France and the restored pre-reformation painted interior is superb.
The market in the town is the best in the area with several pavement cafes. There are also several big supermarkets on the outskirts of the town. There is an interesting art gallery, just past the post office and round the corner, which also has a cafe.
There are many interesting events during the year, amongst the best of which is the night market usually the first Friday evening in August. Other evenst include Bastille Day (14th July) celebrations, which usually include a large antique and bric-a-brac fair and end with fireworks. There is also the local agcultural fair in late August, amongst the attractions of which are the local Poitou donkeys.

| Nearest Travel Links | |
| Airport: | Poitiers: 65 km |
| Railway: | Poitiers: 65 km |
| Ferry: | Calais: 680 km |
A car is recommended to be able to explore the area and from the UK, Calais is the most popular port (6.5 hours without stops, motorway nearly all the way - we suggest Calais, Rouen, Le Mans, Tours and Poitiers with total tolls about 45€).
Flights can be into Poitiers (nearest to the gîte), Limoges (1.25 hours) or La Rochelle (2 hours). By train via TGV (and Eurostar) to Poitiers. You can book the whole journey through the TGV site- but go via Lille as it avoids a cross Paris connection of trains. Lille has two stations - Lille Europe, you can change trains within the same station and Lille Flanders, a short walk across a plaza to change trains.
Car hire can be arranged in advance at the airports and the station.
