The Marche/Abruzzo region

Abruzzo covers 10,794 km² almost two-thirds of which is mountainous. The remainder of the land consists of hills sloping to a narrow plain that runs for most of the 129 kilometre long Adriatic coastline. The Apennine mountain chain runs through the Abruzzo where it reaches its greatest elevations on the Italian peninsula, the highest peaks being Corno Grande (Gran Sasso massif) (2914m) and Monte Amaro (Maiella-group) (2795m). The main rivers are the Aterno-Pescara, the Sangro and the Tronto.

Abruzzo holds some of Italy's best-preserved medieval and Renaissance hill towns especially near the town of L'Aquila, has earned it in some quarters the nickname of "Abruzzoshire", by analogy with the "Chiantishire" nickname sometimes used to refer to the Chianti area of Tuscany, but Abruzzo is still off the beaten path for most visitors to Italy.

One third of the region is designated as national or regional parkland. The following parks lie, wholly or partially, within Abruzzo:

• Parco Nazionale d'Abruzzo, Lazio e Molise (Abruzzo National Park)

• Gran Sasso e Monti della Laga National Park

• Majella National Park

• Sirente Velino Regional Park

• Lago di Barrea (Barrea Lake Wetlands)

The protected areas are environmentally important and are home to rare flora and fauna, such as the brown bear, the wolf and the chamois.

Fara San Martino

Five minutes drive from Civitella MR in the valley below this village is famous for ‘De Cecco’ www.DeCecco.it pasta (you will recognise the brand!) where its factory is located. There are a couple of nice cafes/ bars and a nice restaurant. Here you can access trails into the National Park and there is a tourist office in the centre of the village providing information on walking/ sightseeing tours.

Casoli

25 minutes drive from the house perched high on a hill with quaint narrow streets and old stone houses with a church and fortress right at the top. It's a thriving town of 5,000 people and has plenty of amenities including a couple of supermarkets, cafes, a cinema and a great gelateria and cake shop!

Guardiagrele

This village is known throughout Abruzzo for its wrought-iron craft, copper craft and gold-work. Guardiagrele was the home of the great goldsmith and sculptor Nicola da Guardiagrele, who was born there in the late 15th century.

Captivated by the beauty of the panoramic views of the mountains and valleys of the Maiella visible from some points in the town, the poet Gabriele d'Annunzio nicknamed Guardiagrele 'la terrazza d'Abruzzo ("Abruzzo's terrace").

Church of Santa Maria Maggiore: The asymmetrical facade in Majella stone is divided into three levels with a portal, a huge window in the middle section and a rose window in the top. The belltower dates back to the XIII century, and is one of the oldest in Abruzzo. The interior is Baroque, and comprises a Museum of Sacred History, with the remains of the celebrated silver cross by Nicola da Guardiagrele, dismembered and stolen in 1979.

Church of San Francesco, with a fine XIV century sarcophagus

Tomb of war hero Andrea Bafile, at the end of Bocca di Valle, decorated with ceramics works by Basilio and Tommaso Cascella

Lanciano

This town is about a 30-40 minute drive from Civitella MR and has numerous piazzas, churches, shopping and excellent restaurants.

The beaches of Fossacesia and Le Morgie are a 40 minute drive and the picturesque towns and ski resorts around Roccaraso are approx 40 minutes drive in the other direction.

Civitella Messer Raimondo

There are a number of village amenities five minutes walk from the house including 2 small shops with a deli, butcher and grocery, a bakery, pharmacy, a bar, children’s play area and doctor’s surgery.

"What an amazing break!"

Such a beautiful house in a beautiful location. Gorgeous views from every window with plenty of space for everyone. Lovely kitchen with all mod cons. Great to be away from tourists, a break in a real Italian village full of character and charm. Now we want to check it out in the summer as there is a local heated pool too. Great bar to check out for cheap drinks and a local vibe. Near to mountains for great skiing.

"wonderful place where you can have peace and silence"

Didn't exactly knew what to expect, but were well suprised by the beauty of Abruzzo, the silentness of the village Civitella Messer Raimondo and the friendlyness of the people.

Enjoyed staying at the well equipped house and the daytrips you can make are various.
May be good for hiking, but in our opinion you need a car (with navigation) to get around.

We had a lovely week and would definitely like to come back some time.

Wonderful to hear! Glad you enjoyed your stay so much :)
