The Costa Blanca / Valencia / Alicante Province region
The Costa Blanca or White Coast is made up of two clearly defined scenic sectors. To the North, a curtain of mountains runs parallel to the sea, descending at times to form cliffs and small pebbly beaches. To the South, a vast plain of sand patches, pine forests ,palms and salt deposits make up the backdrop for the long sandy beaches.
Highlighted by the World Health Organization the area between Alicante and Torreveija is the healthiest place to live and holiday in Europe and is especially beneficial to asthma sufferers and those with skin problems and rheumatism.
With over 3000 hours of sunshine a year and average temperatures in June, July, August and September of 25 degrees celsius peaking to 38 during August compared to London's 16. Even the winter temperatures are pleasant and snow and frost are virtually unheard of.
Spain has an immense history and the signs of the different cultures and architecture brought to the country are visible everywhere. Cartagena once a strategic navel base from Roman times still has large maritime presence but its port area has been rebuilt and the recent discovery of a Roman Amphitheatre now restored adds to the preserved temple in the Augusteum museum and the Hours of Fortune, the ruins of a Roman house from the first century are must see attractions.
Alicante is also a great city to visit, and just 30 minutes drive away it offers a wealth of attractions to all visitors. It has miles of golden sandy beaches and a thriving harbour and marina where you can find multi million euro luxury yachts and cruisers. Overlooking The city is the Castillo de Santa Barbera, one of the largest medieval fortresses in Europe and offers magificent views over the city, down the coast to La Manga and up towards Benidorm. Alicante is reasonably compact and easily walkable, enabling visitors to sample some of the numerous shops, bars, restaurants, night clubs and theatres for which the city is renowned. Of special interest is the Old Quarter (El Barrio), La Zona close to the Esplanada de España and the El Puerto district. Alicante is also famous for its Moros y Christianos parade, a celebration of the expulsion of the Moors who invaded and stayed in the Iberian peninsula for over 800 years.
In June Alicante holds its Hogueras fiesta, where massive , colourful papier mache statues are erected Some over 30 metres high(see pictures) in all the many barrios or areas of the city and then burnt after midnight. The fires are accompanied by huge firework display's and all night parties on the beach.
Alicante also has excellent transport links with the rest of Spain and Europe, via its Railway, Bus and Motorway connections as well as ferries to Tabarca Island just off Santa Pola, and to Algeria and the Balearics. Visitors to the area rarely complete their stay without visiting one or more of the many markets for which the area is famous, the largest of which are in Torrevieja every Friday, Almoradi on a Saturday and the Zoco Market and Lemon Tree market near Guardamar del Segura both on Sunday and both 5/10 mins away by car.
Altea, is an ancient Greek town on a low hill north of Benidorm. Seized by the Romans, captured by the Moors then taken in 1244 for the last time by James 1st of Aragon during the Christian reconquest of Spain. The town walls date from this time. They enclose a maze of cobbled, narrow and crooked streets and a jumble of typical Spanish white houses.
The Cities of Murcia and Elche are also well worth a visit. Elche, in particular, has the largest cutivated palm forest in Europe within its city walls, with a specimen for each inhabitant of the city of over 200,000.As well as supplying most of the palms to Spain it also manufactures many of the shoes you see in shops across Europe. For the more adventurous (Kids and Parents alike) a one hour drive north will bring you to Benidorm, the Jalon Valley and Calpe.
Just outside of Benidorm you will find Terra Mitica, a thrill ride theme park for all ages, Terra Natura close by with both an Animal park and water park. Aqualandia and Mundomar are also water parks just on the outskirts of the town. Benidorm has spent a lot of money reinventing itself and the old town is well worth walking around. If its clubs, bars and all day breakfasts you want you can still get them there.
Why not plan your holiday so you can experience one or more of the truly spectacular fiestas. During Easter week (Semana Santa) you will find processions in every town and city every day. In the summer months there are numerous parades and fiestas the biggest being the Moors and Christians with men, women and children in jaw dropping costumes.

There are numerous blue flag beaches at La Mata, La Zenia, Playa Flamenca, Los Locos, El Cura and Lo Ferris along the almost tideless Mediterranean to name but a few. Even closer are the long white sands of Guardamar (10 minutes drive) with three different types of beach: the town beach with its promenade, restaurants and bars, the long dune fringed beach to the south and on to La Mata and the third beach that edges the pine forest with its hidden abandoned monastery and on to the marina.

If the local golf courses are not enough of a challenge, drive south for 40 minutes and you will discover the even more spectacular courses of La Manga and Polaris World. No need to bring your clubs as you can hire them at the courses. In addition you can also hire trolleys or electric buggies. The courses all have eighteen holes, putting and chipping greens and practice areas. There are also cafeterias/ restaurants where you can unwind with something to eat and drink after your round in magnificent surroundings.
There are literally hundreds of quality bars within a 30 minute drive and many just a short walk away for those pre and after dinner drinks with some offering nightly entertainment. Local restaurants include Chinese, American, French, Greek, Italian, Irish and of coarse Spanish. There’s even Patagonian. For those who really want to self cater, a Super Value supermarket is next door to the golf club and a larger Mercadona supermarket between the golf club and Rojales. 10 minutes away are the Carrefour Hypermarket in Torrevieja as well as a Lidl, Aldi and Consum. The local area Sunday market is within 5 minute drive and is great for local bargains and breakfast.
