THE AREA
The surrounding area offers something for everyone - from unspoilt countryside and stunning views to historic cities with Moorish roots to fine sandy beaches. From traditional to modern and cosmopolitan - it's all here. Here are some snippets about the area. They don't pretend to be complete - they're just to whet your appetite and indicate the variety on offer.
QUESADA
Ciudad Quesada is an 'urbanization' or residential area that was first developed in the 1950s and has kept growing since then. It has a whole mixture of nationalities, including many Spanish people who come to holiday or retire there, but there is also a large English-speaking community. Dotted around Quesada you will find small groups of shops, pubs and restaurants. In the centre (which is acutally on the Western edge) you will find banks, a pharmacy, petrol station, and a larger selection of shops including a bodega (wine merchant) and various gift shops. Here's a map showing the location
ROJALES
Rojales is a typical small town that is right next to Quesada. A bustling little place, it is well worth a visit. Here you will find some bars, discos and nightlife beyond what's available in Quesada itself.
TORREVIEJA
Torrevieja is the nearest large town and it's about 15 mins away by car. As you come in to Torrevieja on the Carretera de Crevillente you will pass some larger supermarkets such as Mercadona and Carrefour (the largest of them all) where you will find an extensive range of goods from groceries to electricals. Next to Carrefour is the new Habaneras shopping centre where you will find modern shops with all the latest fashions. Around Habaneras are a number of restaurants and a casino. Continue in to the town centre to explore this traditional Spanish town and port. There are a number of car parks along the front. Along the seafront there are many shops, cafes, bars and restaurants and most days there is a streetmarket. Turn in to the maze of smaller streets to find all kinds of sights and sounds waiting for you including lots more little shops and some excellent restaurants. The town also has many other facilities including an aquapark, a large children's play area and much more. Salt plays a large part in the town's heritage and salt production continues to be a major activity to the present day.
GUARDAMAR
Just up the coast towards Alicante on the main N332 road lies Guardamar. It has a fantastic Blue Flag beach with a long expanse of almost white sand. There are numerous climbing frames and so on for children to enjoy, and during the summer numerous cafes and restaurants open right next to the beach. To the north, the pines that were planted to halt erosion by the sands create a striking landscape. Today the area is a 840 hectare Forest Park called the 'Dunas de Guardamar', and has been declared an Area of Natural Interest.
ELCHE
Elche is the third largest city in Valencia with a long history dating back to the 8th Century. It is probably best known for its palm grove - the largest in the world with over 200,000 palm trees designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2000. For a bird's eye view you can climb up the belltower of the impressive catherdral and look out over the entire city. A new museum charting the history of the area is well worth visiting.
ALICANTE
Alicante is the principal city in the area. There is a large shopping area in the city centre where you will find El Corte Ingles which is the largest department store in town, as well as a number of modern shopping centres on the outskirts. You can wander along the seafront and try and guess how many millions of pounds worth of private yachts are moored in the harbour or take in the numerous museums and other exhibitions. Take a stroll around the Explanada de España on Alicante’s waterfront and you’ll see why it’s Spain’s top makeover city. In less than a decade the port city on the Costa Blanca has been reborn – stroll down palm-lined boulevards to see the MARQ archaeology museum (Plaça Dr Gómez Ulla, 34 965 14 90 00). Eat dockside at Restaurant Los Titorros (Marina Deportiva, 34 965 20 37 07).
MURCIA
Another historic city well worth a visit is Murcia. it has some fine architecture, especially the cathedral with its baroque facade and the other public buildings close by. Enjoy a coffee or an ice cream in one of the cafes in and around the Plaza Cardenal Belluga before wandering the many small streets packed with shops.
Ciudad Quesada, Rojales area
On Site Golf Course, Aquapark, Horseriding, Marine Harbour (10 Mins drive) 5* Hotel with Spa facilities, Great Cuisine, Watersport activities on the lake. tennis & basketball courts nearby. There is also a spa on the Salt Lake of Torrevieja
THINGS TO DO - We have a Great Welcome Book to help renters with details of of the area with places to go and see & do , the best restaurants to try
There's something for everyone to do around here - here's a selection of things to start you off. You'll find much more by surfing other sites on the web, or by picking up one of the free local papers you'll find in the pubs and cafes of Quesada. For the family
Here's some ideas:
The Aquapark in Rojales - just down the road - lots of fun! Opens through the summer, check at other times. Aquopolis in Torrevieja - another larger waterpark with attractions for all the family. Pola Park in Santa Pola (10 mins drive) There are more than 20 different attraction in the park, including bouncy castles, rides through the park, a boating lake, the laser labyrinth, scary rides, a games arcade, a 60m high tower from which there is an excellent panorama, and the new tropical garden mini golf. Santa Pola aquarium (10 mins drive) - It has a area of 707m² divided into 9 large aquariums that display the flora and fauna of the Mediterranean Sea including turtles, groupers, morays, sea-bass, etc.
Go Carts at Quesada - summer only Rio Safari at Elche - 15 mins drive - summer only Museum of the Salt and Sea Torrevieja - 15 mins drive - open all year Bird watch and nature walks at Salt Lakes, Torrevieja - 10 mins drive
FOR THE GOLFERS
There's one major golf course - La Marquesa - right in Quesada just a few minutes away - you can see part of the green from the roof terrace.
Another, perhaps more renowned, is in Villamartin which is about 20-30 mins away, south of Torrevieja.
THE BEACHES
As you would expect, there are plenty of fabulous beaches with endless white sand along the coast. Some streches can get very busy in the height of summer but you can always find quieter spots. One of the best beaches has to be Guardamar, about 8 minutes away. A very long beach with a nice gentle slope into the sea. There's often a bit of a breeze and you can find people flying kites and so on. In the summer, the section by the town itself has bars and cafes right at the edge of the sand and it can feel very busy. If you prefer a quieter area go out of the town a bit.
La Marina offers a nice strtech of sand but quieter with less commercialisation.
There's no beach in central Torrevieja itself - this is a pretty rocky area although there are swimming facilities.
La Mata, at the northern end of Torrevieja, is the beach area and like Guardamar this can be very busy during the summer period. There's a nice boardwalk and beach hut cafe/restaurants in this area. On most beaches you can hire sun loungers, paddle-boats and even jet skis.
SHOPPING
There's plenty of excellent shopping around - from local streetmarkets to traditional little shops to modern shopping centres to hypermarkets. Expect to pay a lot less than in the UK for things like leather goods, shoes, wines and spirits and more besides. Although many of the modern shopping centre developments will stay open all day, expect the more traditional shops in the towns and cities to close for the siesta around 1 or 2 pm and re-open again around 5 or 6pm until around 9pm.
About 15 minutes away is the Habaneras shopping centre in Torrevieja. This modern centre has the latest fashions and much else besides. Check out their website at www.habaneras.es In the centre of Torrevieja you will find more traditional shops in the maze of small streets.
There's also a semi-permanent market at the end of the Paseo de la Libertad where it meets the Paseo Maritimo de Juan Aparicio, busiest in the evenings. There are many open-air markets in the towns around and about.
Here's a selection: Monday: Elche, Santa Pola Tuesday: Alicante Wednesday:Guardamar, La Mata Thursday: San Javier, Rojales, Alicante Friday: Torrevieja, Los Montesinos Saturday: Almoradi, Elche, Santa Pola Sunday: CV895 Quesada/Guardamar Road (Look for the "Mercadillo" sign)
