The Umbria region
Museums, castles and fortresses, modern and contemporary art, artistic and historical events: the secret of Umbria’s beauty lies in the bond that Umbrians have always had with their rich and glorious past. In the Middle Ages and in the Renaissance, it was a pulsating region at the heart of Italian historical, cultural, and religious events, and its cities flourished in an extraordinary manner, accumulating an enormous wealth of artistic jewels. Umbria is a multifaceted region, able to encompass a thousand different aspects, each one perfectly balanced with the others. A region where man and nature meet, and intense spirituality lives side by side with secular pride. Every city has its own unique and yet harmonious identity, which is the result of thousands of years of civilisations: Umbrian, Etruscan and Roman, followed by the extraordinary period of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance.
The most important village and town famous for great history and culture, as Cortona, Assisi, Perugia, Arezzo, Florence, Gubbio and Siena are easy to reach from the Villa.
Citta Di Castello / San Leo Bastia area
A thriving Umbrian market town, Città di Castello has a charming historic medieval centre. Cobbled streets wind their way to the main square where there are restaurants, shops and cafès. At dusk, the pedestrianised Corso (High Street) comes alive as the locals walk up and down for their daily passegiata, meeting friends and family. The collection of Municipal Gallery is the second most important in Umbria, after that of the National Gallery in Perugia. It preserves masterpieces by Maestro da Castello, Luca Signorelli, Raffaello, Andrea and Giovanni Della Robbia, Ghiberti, Ghirlandaio, Raffaellino del Colle, Pomarancio, Santi di Tito, and it underlines the high pictorial and decorative quality of the work of Cristofano Gherardi and Cola dell'Amatrice from entering and including the staircase splendidly frescoed with rich and complex decorations in symbolic and commemorative style. Albizzini Palace since 1981 has been site of the Master, Alberto Burri's precious Collection that he donated to the town. Burri's collection is one of the richest and most organic collection's from one of the most important 20th century artist's. The realisation of this museum, unique in the world, is Burri's gift to his home town and birth place, displaying the wonderful works of his original and innovative artistic designs and it allows for the full reading of it as a unique itinerary. It is based on an anthology from 1948 to 1998 divided into twenty rooms relating to the subjects of painting, sculpture, graphic designs, many sketches for the bigger creations and cuttings and also for set designs and theatres.
