Relax under the pear trees or the vine covered pergola of this characteristic stone farmhouse, sampling the local wines and salamis, after a day in the hilltowns and cities. For nature lovers the endless miles of walks through the wooded hills are a delight. The oak and chestnut woods are home to various animals as well as many bird species.
In a peaceful wooded location, you are on the Umbria / Tuscany border and yet 20% of the World's artistic heritage is to be found within a 150klm radius.
Home cooked regional speciality meals can be ordered and delivered to La Fonte with 24hrs notice. Spacious accommodation over three floors with a large terrace overlooking the garden and hills make this a relaxing home.

The Umbria region
The "Green heart of Italy" is the name rightly given to Umbria. This region is in the centre of Italy and the warm spring and autumn with the hot summer months of July and August make it ever popular with visitors. The green hills provide a refreshing change from the hilltowns and cities of the area.
The area retains its ancient rural charms with local festivals to be found honouring saints or local specialites. Every hilltop seems to offer another attractive town starting with nearby Santa Maria Tiberina dating back to Etruscan times.
Assisi with its stunning cathedral and picturesque town, Orvieto with its famous wine, Todi (voted the best place in the World to live), Gubbio with its Roman amphitheatre and spectacular views over the medieval town as you take the funicular to the hilltop are all within one hours drive. Local specialities include the famous white truffles, wild boar salami as well as Umbrian olive oil considered one of the best.
Local festivals abound with the Jazz Festival and Eurochocolate festivals in Perugia, truffle festivals and the largest horse fair in Italy held in Citta di Castello. Traditional lifestyles continue with Citta di Castello being the Italian centre for rustic furniture, or maybe the locally made ceramics are what you are looking for.

La Fonte is situated in the Upper Tiber Valley which makes visit to the attractions of both Umbria and Tuscany possible. Rome and Florence are just over an hour and a half away by train from Arezzo. Or consider the beautiful hill towns for which the area is so renowned. Santa Maria di Tiberina is 30 minutes away dating back to Etruscan times. Assisi with is stunning basilica and world famous frescoes just 40 minutes.
Gubbio has a ferrovia which gives breathtaking views over the medieval town and roman amphitheatre below. Spoleto, Todi, and Norcia all have their own unique charms as you wander through the ancient streets. Away from sightseeing, enjoy the tranquility if La Fonte and the many miles of wooded walks that you can take from the farmhouse. Nearby sports allow for swimming, golf and tennis or horseriding in the hills.
Although landlocked, Umbria has the largest lake in Italy - Lake Trasimeno where there are sandy beaches and water sports available. Agriculture is the mainstay of the region and within 50 kilometres of la Fonte visits to see the production of local products are possible from honey collection, to vineyards to truffle hunting. Try the thermal spa dating back to Roman times at Fontecchio Citta di Castello. With its modern wellness centre or the ancient mineral spring in the park.
How to get there
Ryan Air flies from Stansted to Perugia which is 45 minutes to La Fonte. In addition Easy Jet and most other budget airlines and British Airways fly into Pisa which is 2.5 hrs drive. Rome Airport is 3 hrs drive.
Eurostar trains to Arezzo are easily booked and then it is only 40 minutes drive from Arezzo.
Avis car hire is right outside Arezzo station. By road the property is easily reached from the main E45 highway and then taking the road to Monte Santa Maria Tiberina.

Further details indoors: La Fonte is set over 3 floors with three spacious bedrooms, large shower room and bathroom for all family and group needs. The large family bedroom on the third floor has 2 roll away beds for children if needed to allow for 8 people. The stone flagged sitting room has a large log fire and the original stone work area and sympathetic furnishings.
The dining room was once the animal barn with stone flagged floors and French windows opening onto the south facing terrace which overlooks the wooded hills around.
The kitchen retains the old wooden manger which makes a handy wine rack for those essential local wines. Chestnut beams, terracotta or stone flagged floors and chestnut wooden shutters in all the rooms lovingly retained. A stone archway connects La Fonte to a smaller property but privacy and quietness remain features of La Fonte.
Further details outdoors: The large stone terrace covered with a grape vine makes an ideal place for dining and relaxing. South facing it looks over the hills and to the ancient watchtower.
Depending on the season guest can take fruit from the fig or pear trees or collect fresh walnuts, all found in the garden. BBQ available for relaxing evenings in the garden at La Fonte with a table and chairs for outside dining.
Deer, wild boar, porcupine, hares and rabbits all pass through the garden and are to be found in the surrounding woodland.
Painters and bird enthusiasts will love the rural location and country views. Culture vultures will enjoy the serenity after a day of visiting the plentiful towns and cities which make the region so popular.
