The Central England/Cotswolds region
Lower Mill Estate sits in the heart of the Cotswolds, a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. A rural idyll less than two hours from the bustle of London, the Cotswold area has for many years been a popular weekend destination for prosperous residents of the capital. The estate is secure, secluded and in the middle of a nature reserve, but within easy reach of all the Cotswolds has to offer, including Michelin-starred restaurants, fascinating craft and antique fairs, farmers' markets, country pubs and tempting delicatessens. Nearby historic towns include:
CIRENCESTER: This is the 'local town' (10 minutes drive) and is a prime example of a traditional Cotswold market town with a lovely variety of shops restaurants and cafes and a weekly market. Waitrose, M&S and Tesco are all within a 10 minute drive of the house. The town has a vibrant history stretching back to Roman times when it was a thriving centre for the wool trade, and most recently it played an important role in the Arts and Crafts movement.
BOURTON-ON-THE-WATER: Famously picturesque, Bourton-on-the-Water is sometimes referred to as the 'Venice of the Cotswolds' thanks to the many low stone bridges that cross the River Windrush which runs through the town. It is known for the distinctive architecture of its 17th century buildings, the Dragonfly Maze – a yew maze partly designed by the artist Kit Williams – and its 1930s model replica of the village.
CHELTENHAM: Just over 25 miles north of Lower Mill Estate, on the edge of the Cotswolds, lies Cheltenham, a large spa town that's been a popular holiday resort since mineral springs were discovered there in 1716. Cheltenham plays host to a number of international festivals (literature, jazz etc) and hosts one of the most famous meetings in the horse-racing calendar. The town is also known for its Regency architecture its diverse galleries and museums, and boasts excellent shopping and restaurants.
BATH: To the south west of Lower Mill Estate is Bath, another spa town famous for its architecture. Bath is a World Heritage Site and major tourist destination due to its cultural and historical significance. It offers visitors the opportunity to bathe in naturally heated spring waters, have tea in the famous pump-rooms, and has five theatres, and a number of music, film, literature and food festivals.
