The Central England / Cotswolds / Cheltenham / Gloucester region

Somerford Keynes is a quiet, small village 4 miles from the Roman town of Cirencester (Corinium).
Cirencester is the capital of the Cotswolds. It is a market town, which lies on the lower dip-slopes of the Cotswold Hills. There are many Roman remains including several Roman villas near the villages of Chedworth and Withington. The amphitheatre still exists in the Querns area to the SW of the town.
The Cotswolds is an area of outstanding natural beauty and typically a very English part of the country known for its hills, Cotswold stone and delightful villages and towns.
NB Roman Cirencester was known as Corinium Dobunnorum. The Romans built a fort around Corinium where the Fosse Way crossed the Churn. This made it the second-largest important town in Britain, second only in importance to London.

Tucked away amongst the apple trees, this quirky lodge is perfect for a stay in the Cotswolds. We liked the privacy and peacefulness, and the lodge itself was quirky. Creaky floorboards, wood burner, lived in sofas..an instant 'home' feel and a good representation of country living. The owner was very friendly and obliging. All in all, we enjoyed our stay and likely to return. Downside? If I was going to be really picky, I'd suggest new bed linen (seen better days) and a new mattress (not too comfortable) - & clean up the bath. Access to a washing machine would be useful...and wifi! |
