The Central England/Cotswolds region

Tetbury is located near the eastern edge of the Cotswold Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

The area is well known for gentle hillsides ('wolds'), outstanding countryside with river valleys, water meadows and beech woods, sleepy ancient limestone villages, historic market towns and for being 'typically English'.

Throughout the area, the honey-coloured Cotswolds limestone features in buildings and stone walls acting as a common thread in seamlessly blending the historic towns and villages with their surrounding landscape. Offering breath-taking scenery ideal for keen walkers, the Cotswolds offers 3000 miles of public footpaths and offers one of the best kept 'rights of way' networks in the country.

The Cotswold Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty also contains a number of national and regional walking routes such as The Cotswold Way Trail, Macmillan Way, Oxfordshire Way and Shakespeare's Way. Circular routes with self-guided leaflets are also plentiful.

Well within an hour's drive are Bath, Bristol, Bourton-on-the-Water, Stow-on-the-Wold, the city of Gloucester – with its fine cathedral – and the spa town Cheltenham, renowned for its many cultural festivals, elegant Regency architecture, excellent shopping, and the racecourse which is the host of the internationally famous Gold Cup each March.

Slightly further afield, but still within a 1.5 hour drive, are Stratford upon Avon and Oxford.

Cirencester

The market town of Tetbury is in the Gloucestershire Cotswolds. In the Middle Ages, Tetbury was an important market town for the Cotswolds' wool trade and the town centre is still dominated by the splendid pillared Market House built in 1655. The town is known as an 'architectural gem' as many of the wool merchants' houses still look as they did 300 years ago.

Tetbury is well known for its antique shops and its close proximity to Prince Charles's Highgrove Gardens which are only a 10 minute drive away. The town has a variety of independent, specialist shops, tea rooms, bistros, cafés, pubs and restaurants which offer a good choice of food and drink.

In addition to Highgrove Gardens, a short drive away you will find other local attractions that include: Chavenage House, filming location for the BBC's Lark Rise to Candleford and Tess of the D'Urbervilles; Westonbirt Arboretum, which is particularly stunning in autumn; the Cotswold Water Park, for a range water sports and other recreational activities; and other historic towns such as Cirencester, Nailsworth and Stroud.
