The Cotswolds is the largest officially designated 'Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty' in England. The area is well known for gentle hillsides ('wolds'), outstanding countryside with river valleys, water meadows and beech woods, sleepy ancient limestone villages, historic market towns and for being so 'typically English' where time has stood still for over 300 years.
Local attractions range from the Cotswolds Wildlife Park and the Cotswold Country Park and Beach, popular with children, to museums, parks and gardens for everyone. Not to mention the many quaint country pubs with a great range of ales and delicious, locally sourced menus.
A great base to come and enjoy the Cheltenham Festival and Gold Cup in March, the Badminton Horse Trials in April, and the Royal International Air Tattoo at Fairford in July.
The Cirencester / South Cerney area
Cirencester is an old Roman town just 4 miles away and a must-see, with its fantastic church and various old buildings, boutique shops and great restaurants and coffee bars. A great place to spend some time 'mooching' around or an evening's dining.
South Cerney is an old picturesque Saxon Village, dating back to 999 AD! With a lovely old church, 3 great pubs, a small minimarket, post office, fish and chip shop and Indian take-away, a beauty salon and an 18-hole golf course, South Cerney has all the conveniences you may need.
However within a 40 minute walk, there is also a hotel with a good restaurant, wine bar and Spa, next door is the Gateway Centre, the local tourist information centre and cafe, and a large sports shop and a fishing tackle shop.
There are many activities to enjoy in the area, including: golf, walking, horse riding, cycling, fishing and many watersports, including a cable-ski lake and wake-boarding. Too much to do, too little time!
