The Central England / Cotswolds / Gloucestershire region
Region:
Online magazine AskMen.com has compiled a list of the top ten ‘paradise’ locations around the world that seem to have remained untouched by civilisation. The Cotswolds is 2nd Place!
The region is famous for its ancient mellow ‘honey’ coloured limestone villages that blend perfectly into the countryside and its bustling market towns. Many have scarcely altered since they grew up on the prosperity of the medieval wool trade in the 15th and 16th centuries and subsequently forgotten about for more then 300 years. This sequence of events now makes the Cotswolds region one of the most treasured, toured and vacationed in England and the UK for nowhere else will you see such timeless uniqueness and heart warming preservation on such a scale.
Many traditional villages within 15 minutes reach, offering tradition combined with chic
Ideal for antique hunters :visit the charming villages of Bourton on the Water (the Venice of the Cotswolds), Burford, Stow on the Wold, Moreton in Marsh and Chipping Camden (plus many others), the larger spa towns of Bath (a World Heritage Site) and Cheltenham (famed for it’s beautiful Regency
architecture) or Oxford (the city of dreaming spires) and Stratford-upon-Avon is just over 1 hour away.
For those looking for a bargain, Bicester Village offers most sought-after brands at prices reduced by up to 60%
The Cirencester / Lower Mill area
We are within a short walk to Somerford Keynes, a local village with a Quality Pub and a number of other small villages are within 5 minutes drive, offering local amenities like: Post office, Grocery shop and more Pubs.
The estate is located within the Cotswold Waterpark which provides numerous opportunities to explore either on foot, by bike or watercraft, seasonal cable skiing is also on offer as are sailing, canoeing and windsurfing tuition/hire.
The are several golf courses locally.
An artificial beach on one of the lakes within the Keynes Country Park will keep the children entertained as will the local Butts Farm whilst Magicland in Cirencester is available for very young children if the weather is poor.
Horse riding and bycicle hire is also available locally.
Regular polo matches are played in & around Cirencester.
Cirencester is the nearest town and is only 10 minutes drive, where you will find large Tesco, Waitrose, M&S and a good variety of shops/boutiques, pubs and restaurants.
The town of Cirencester (formerly named Corinium was the second largest town in Britain during Roman times) is home to the Corinium Museum, the Cirencester Abbey (the longest known Saxon church in England) and host to regular market days.
Other popular Cotswold towns are within a 40 mile radius (Tewkesbury, Broadway, Stow-on-the-Wold, Bourton-on-the-Water, Swindon, Bath, Oxford and Stratford upon Avon)

Very clean and tidy property in a fantastic location on site. Overlooks the lakes with far reaching views. All the rooms and bathrooms were clean and tidy and the beds comfortable. The use of the spa is a great asset and enjoyed a number of swims and treatments. A trip into Cirencester is worthwhile but I would recommend doing an 'online shop' for groceries if you don't want to waste time doing domestic chores. Excellent house. |

We stayed at 55 Howells Mere for a 60th birthday weekend. The guests ages ranged from 13 weeks old to 60 and there was something there for everyone to enjoy. The property itself was stunning - it was modern, comfortable and well kept and the owners had thought of everything that visitors may need to enjoy their holiday. There was even an Xbox and a range of DVDs and games to keep the children entertained on rainy days. It is situated right on the edge of the lake and the open plan lounge, dining room and kitchen is on the top floor so the floors across the lake from the balcony was lovely. The property is arranged over three storeys and there are a lot of stairs so I wouldn't recommend this to anybody who struggles to climb stairs. The estate itself is also fantastic - it is extremely well maintained and the properties are almost as beautiful to look at as the scenery! The spa is great - we were a little worried about taking the children in to use the pool but it was very family friendly and there were lots of other children using the swimming pools in the spa. There is also a shop/cafe on site but we didn't use that. All in all we had a fab weekend at this property. It's great for people who want both a luxury break but also family friendly fun. |
