The Central England / Cotswolds / Gloucestershire region
Cotswolds is one of the most 'quintessentially English' and unspoiled regions of England, UK. The unique region officially covers an area of 790 square miles in the upper part of the southwest region of England and is the country's largest officially designated 'Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty'.
Popular with both the English themselves and international visitors from all over the world, the area is well known for gentle hillsides (‘wolds’), outstanding countryside with river valleys, water meadows and beech woods, sleepy ancient limestone villages, historic market towns and for being so ‘typically English’ where time has stood still for over 300 years. The dignified villages and towns owe much of their charm from the use of the warm, honey-coloured limestone which was locally quarried by hand and used alike for humble weavers cottages, mansions, and churches. Never far from sight, numerous streams wind through the valleys and chatter alongside main streets.
The demise, and now the good fortune, of the Cotswolds was due to the increasing manufacture of cloth in the 16th and 17th centuries leading to a forgotten wool industry and a forgotten Cotswolds. Hence the villages have undertaken no change for 300 years and are now to be marvelled at for their perfect preservation and beauty that only exists in this most unique of regions in the United Kingdom.
The Cotswolds has some of the most beautiful areas and places to be found and to holiday, from the northern Cotswold's gateway of Broadway to the magnificent roman town and now Georgian City of Bath on the southern fringes. It will include Shakespeare's Stratford upon Avon, the king maker's castle of Warwick, and Winston Churchhill's childhood home, Blenheim Palace.
Lechlade is a small Cotswold market town situated at the southern borders of the Cotswolds where the Rivers Coln and Leach join the Thames, and Inglesham, just above Lechlade, marks the head of its navigation. For centuries Lachlade was on one of the main trade arteries west from London, by both road and river. Leisure boats have replaced the trading vessels for Lechlade is now a favourite mooring place. Lechlade lodge is located on the Lakes by Yoo estate, which situated one mile out of Lechlade. T
To the east on the A417, near the confluence of the Thames and the Leach is St. John's bridge, reputed to be the first stone bridge over the Thames outside London. The original structure dates back to 1229, but was rebuilt about 1830. Near the bridge is St. John's lock overlooked by a statue purporting to be Father Thames, brought here from its original site near the source of the river. To the south the A361 road crosses the Thames with the old toll bridge, the 18th century Halfpenny bridge. The town is on the A433 just 13 miles from Cirencester, 11 miles from Swindon, 25 miles from Oxford.
