The Central England/Cotswolds region
The Cotswolds is an area of natural outstanding beauty with many tourists visiting each year. The wonderful honey coloured, Cotswold stone can be seen in cottages throughout the towns making this a unique area. It is perfect for people who love walking or bike riding the scenery and countryside are quite stunning. Golf courses are also plentiful. There is always one event or another taking place, Cheltenham Race Week Festival - mid March for horse racing enthusiasts, Badminton Horse Trials, 4 day eventing - early spring, Cotswold Air Show - June and the Royal Internaional Air Tattoo - July, Gatcombe Park (Home of Princess Ann) Horse Trials - August, Polo played regularly at Westonbirt and Cirencester. Craft and Antique fairs - several major fairs held throughout the year. Westonbirt Arboretum with its spectacular spring/summer/autumn floral displays as well as its many concerts throughout the year to name but a few.
Tetbury is a delightful town with elegant buildings, once a thriving market town it has one of the finest examples of a pillared market hall, built in 1655, it has undergone major refurbishment and is now restored and enjoyed by all. The church of St Marys built between 1771 and 1781 is open daily to visitors and is one of the best Georgian Gothic churches boasting the fourth highest spire in England. Many of the shops in Tetbury are individually owned and bear the Prince of Wales feathers a sign that they hold the Royal Warrant. In fact 1 mile south of Tetbury is Highgrove the country home of HRH Prince of Wales, Gatcombe Park the home of the Princess Royal is 4 miles north of Tetbury.
Each year the famous Woolsack races take place - the first Bank holiday in May where teams compete up and down an extremely steep hill carrying large heavy sacks to win the coveted title. The town is closed to traffic on this day with stalls lining both sides of the towns main streets selling all varieties of things - a real carnival atmosphere and a great day for all.

we were met by Ros who showed us around and left a good welcome pack including a plate of cakes.
we were just round the corner from the high street and only a few miles from Highgrove which we had booked.
There was only one bathroom but it was very smart with plenty of hot water and the downstairs toilet meant no problems.
the view from the back garden were stunning,we loved it.

It was our first time in the Cotswolds, and first time in a cottage. Mabels Oak was easy to find (even though it was also our first time driving in the UK). Tetbury is a lovely place, and getting around is not a problem. Ros (owner) was a really nice host, and we felt very comfortable throughout the whole stay. The cottage overlooks a field that has sheep on it, which was a good out-of-the-city experience for us. Our only regret was that our stay was too short as we could only allocate 3 days for the visit to the Cotswolds, and to the cottage. We'll be back some day!

"Fantastic and comfortable accommodation for 5!"
Mable Oaks Cottage was very comfortable for five of us. It is a beautiful spot on the outskirt of Tetbury, overlooking a small creek. The accommodation came with a patio and barbecue, though we didn't use these. The Kitchen was well equipped, though we only used it for making tea and breakfast. The Cottage is an old stone house with lots of charm.
Booking the place was easy. We sent a money order for the deposit and another for the balance just before arrival. The owners sent us a complete set of instructions for finding the place and gave us lots of recommendations on what to do and where to eat.
The town centre is a short walk up the hill from the cottage, with a grocery nearby. Tilbury has an historic church, town hall and a number of older buildings from its Wool industry past.
We found Mable Oaks a great base for exploring the Cotswolds and the greater area. Lacock, Bath, Avebury, and Gloucester are all under an hour and even Stratford for a Shakespeare play was only just over an hour away by car.
We liked the cottages location in the Cotswolds, as well as its being a short walk to shops and pubs. I didn't like the narrow lane leading down to the parking. I was driving a much bigger vehicle than I am used to and since we drive on the right hand side of the road in Canada I found it disconcertingly hard to know how close the left side of the car was to the wall. But, it would easy in a smaller car.
Our favourite place to eat was the Red Lion Pub in Lacock, near the Abbey.
The owners were very pleasant and friendly. We would definitely want to stay there again if we get the chance to go back.
