The Campania region

Campania region is the beginning of the 'mezzogiorno'. Translating as the 'midday' the phrase evokes the sun-baked south. And Campania - with its ancient Greek and Roman towns, rumbling volcanoes and glittering blue coastline, at times evokes Classical Greece as much as modern Italy. You could be a million miles from bureaucratic and businesslike Milan.

Throughout much of its history Campania has been at the centre of Western Civilisation's most significant entities. The area was colonised by Ancient Greeks and was within Magna Græcia, until the Roman Republic began to dominate. During the Roman era the area was highly respected as a place of culture by the emperors, where it balanced Greco-Roman culture. The area had many duchies and principalities during the Middle Ages, in the hands of the Byzantine Empire and some Lombards.

It was under the Normans that the smaller independent states were brought together as part of a sizeable European kingdom, known as the Kingdom of Sicily, before the mainland broke away to form the Kingdom of Naples. It was during this period that especially elements of Spanish, French and Aragonese culture touched Campania. Later the area became the central part of the Two Sicilies under the Bourbons, until the Italian unification of 1860 when it became part of the new state Italy.

The capital city of Campania is Naples. Campania is rich in culture, especially in regards to gastronomy, music, architecture, archaeological and ancient sites such as Pompeii, Herculaneum and Paestum. The name of Campania itself is derived from Latin, as the Romans knew the region as Campania felix, which translates into English as "fortunate countryside". The rich natural sights of Campania make it highly important in the tourism industry, especially along the Amalfi Coast, Cilento Coast, Mount Vesuvius and the island of Capri.

Cilento

Would you believe that just a few miles off the usual tourists' routes lies an enchanting mix of culture, art, nature and folklore?

The Cilento National Park is in the southern part of the bay of Salerno, just south of the Amalfi Coast.

In Cilento unaffected landscapes are populated by the genuine hospitality of the inhabitants.

The eye is captured by beautiful nuances of green and blue, which mix where the rocky coasts dive into the sea. Sandy beaches await those who wish to swim in the warm Mediterranean Sea.

Tiny seaports, gorgeous bays and white, pink and yellow little houses complete the unique scenarios that can't be found anywhere else.

History was so fascinated by this land that it simply could not leave. The ancient Greek temples of Paestum and the excavations of Velia still stand where the ancestors of mankind built them in 500 B.C. For its exceptional historical significance, in 1998 the Cilento area has been inscribed on the World Heritage List by Unesco.

It also seems that Cilento has been able to make a deal with the weather: summer, with its shining sun, lasts from the end of April to the beginning of October.

So, if you think that your Italian vacation should be off the beaten path, yet close enough for day trips to some of the "usual suspects" (Pompeii, Naples, Sorrento, Capri, Positano and the Amalfi Coast -- even Rome), with a strong taste of authentic Italy and Mediterranean beaches, yes, Cilento is the place for you. And at night you'll get the chance to relax in this magic place where time has stopped and stress and chaos are unheard of.
