The Carthouse

About the home
The Carthouse has been recently converted into a 3-bedroom holiday home. Downstairs it has an open-plan living, dining, kitchen area plus a downstairs double/twin (beds can be linked) bedroom, bathroom (shower, loo, sink) and a utility room. The living area has 3 sets of doors that can open out onto the patio. Upstairs there are 2 bedrooms, the larger one has a double bed, the smaller is either double or twin (beds can be linked). There is a bathroom upstairs with bath/shower, loo and sink. The double cantilever oak stairs are lit by a crystal chandelier and reach each bedroom via a bridge across the living space below. Outside, the front is laid to grass and a large gravel driveway. To the side is a lawn, and to the rear is a large patio with terraced lawns looking out onto fields. There is a small summerhouse, garden furniture, BBQ and a clothes line. The nearby pub - the Hatchett Inn (SP11 9DX) - is fantastic. Equally, the nearby woods are quiet and secluded and (in season - around Easter) the bluebells are amongst the best in England. The Chute Causeway is a mile or so above the Carhouse (through the woods) and is an ancient Roman road between Cirencester and Winchester. Stonehenge is 30 minutes away, and Salisbury and Winchester with their magnificent cathedrals are each about 40 minutes distant by car. Trains from Andover (10 minutes away) take 1 hour 10 minutes to get to London.

Further details indoors:
The Carthouse is furnished to a very high standard. The beds are all new, and the kitchen, bathrooms and utility room are fully equipped. The floor downstairs is travertine throughout with underfloor heating. There are oak beams and posts exposed within the living area and the full length windows and french doors are all oak. There are 2 sets of high quality linen and towels. We live close by and can sort queries face-to-face.
Further details outdoors:
There is parking for 3 cars at the front.
Further details
The Carthouse is ideal for well-behaved dogs - indeed the area is perfect for dogs and dog walking. The stone floor is easy-clean and the utility room has a back door to allow muddy hounds to be sorted out before letting them in to the kitchen. The utility room also makes a very good dog sleeping area. Dogs are not allowed upstairs.
The Central Southern England / Wiltshire region

The Carhouse is situated in Chute Cadley in the eastern-most reaches of Wiltshire. This is part of the North Wessex Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It is close to ancient sites such as Avebury, Silbury Hill, Salisbury Plain, and Stonehenge. It is also close to Winchester and Salisbury to the south, and to the picturesque towns of Marlborough and Hungerford to the north. Savernake Forest lies between Chute and Marlborogh, and along with nearby Collingbourne Woods is great for a picnic or cycle riding. Finally, the Kennet and Avon canal passes east-west a few miles north of the Carthouse.
The Chute Cadley area
The Chutes (Lower Chute, Upper Chute, Chute Cadley, Chute Forest and Chute Standen) comprise a very quiet, secluded collection of small (and very small) villages between Andover to the south and Hungerford to the north. There are 3 great pubs, the Hatchett Inn at Lower Chute, the Cross-Keys inn at Upper Chute and the Cricketers Inn at nearby Tangley. The Chute Fete takes place on the 3rd Saturday of June and is well worth attending. See 'www.thechutes.org.uk' - not always very up-to-date, but useful to get a flavour of the community!

From A303, leave at Weyhill junction, take A342 west for 1.4 miles, turn right signed 'The Chutes', follow for 4.3 miles and reach T junction at Hatchett Inn in Lower Chute (great pub). Turn right, then after 100 metres, turn left at War Memorial, continue 0.5 mile and turn left into New Buildings at outskirts of Chute Cadley. The Carthouse is at the end on the right.
From M4 (coming from London). Leave at J13 go south on A34 for about 7 miles. Turn left off A34 at Wash Common turning (not well signed, beware of driving past). Take A343 southbound for 8.6 miles and then turn right onto lane signed The Chutes & Tangley. (Another tricky turn - its at top of hill after Hursbourne Tarrant). Follow the lane and simply go straight ahead at the 2 cross-roads. After 3.2 miles of twisty lanes, bear right through Tangley (see Cricketers Pub on right - great place). Turn right at T junction, then first left after 500 yards. Follow lane into Chute Cadley, take first right into New Buildings at outskirts of Chute Cadley. The Carthouse is at the end on the right.
From M4 (coming from the West). Leave at J12 and go south on A338. Stay on A338 through Hungerford for approx 10 miles and turn left for Marten. Follow for 1.7 miles and turn right onto Chute Causeway (signed Chute & Conholt). Follow up and onto Causeway for about 3.5 miles and turn right onto Dummer Lane (signed Chute). Go downhill on narrow lane for a mile, turn left at he bottom, follow road into Lower Chute. See Hatchett Inn on left (great pub). After 100 yards, turn left at War Memorial, continue 0.5 mile and turn left into New Buildings at outskirts of Chute Cadley. The Carthouse is at the end on the right.

We stayed at the courthouse for a weekend in March. It was a wonderful place to stay. The property is five-star. The quality of the kitchen, bathroom etc are superb. Would definitely recommend a weekend break for anyone staying at the Carthouse lovely location, local pub is really good & the property is metres away from woods which are ideal for walking dogs and the owners were very helpful. |

A group of us stayed in the Carthouse over New Year and couldn't have been more pleased with our accomodation. The pictures really don't do it justice - luxurious, with all the mod cons and a beautifully quiet location. The owner couldn't have been more friendly, amenable and accomodating. With some great pubs in the area and some very friendly locals, we would thoroughly recommend the location and in particular, the wonderful Carthouse. |
