"If you want to discover the real Spain, go to Chulilla"
We stayed for 2 weeks at the end of September at Apartamentos La Muela and had a wonderful stay. The village itself is charming, with amazing views of the sheer cliffs of the gorge and the fortifications from the window of our living room. It is a very restful place, mostly coming to life at the weekend with the return of those that spend the week days in the city of Valencia and the extra weekend visitors. It is a centre for climbing with the main season starting a bit later in the year though we did see a couple of people dangling from ropes one day and several in the village from time to time with all the equipment. The walk up to the ruined (originally Islamic) castle that clings to the cliff face on the edge of the village is actually far easier than it looks and the views back over the village, into the gorge and down the valley towards the South West are stunning – take binoculars. All of this can be seen from the pictures, though the reality really is far better, but the best thing about Chulillia is the friendliness, warmth and generosity of its people. If you want to discover the real Spain, go to Chulilla; unfortunately during our stay we were evacuated due to terrible forest fires, but luckily the village was not damaged by the fire and the experience actually reinforced our feeling of welcome and caring by the people
