The South Island region
Christchurch is a wonderful place to base yourself for a South Island holiday. Day trips can be taken to Hanmer Springs, Kaikoura, the West Coast, and the Southern Alps.
Christchurch / West Eyreton area
Christchurch is located on the Canterbury Plains, and is bordered by the Southern Alps to the west, the Pacific Ocean to the east, Waimakariri River to the north and Banks Peninsula to the south. With a population ot 300,000 people, it is the South Island's largest city and is often referred to as the Garden City. The region's temperate climate and good soil provide perfect growing conditions enabling the many orchards gardens to flourish.
Canterbury offers a diverse range of outdoor activities, reflecting its varied terrain. The Hurunui, Rangitata and Waimakariri Rivers - braided rivers that wind across the Canterbury Plains - provide adventure sports such as rafting and jet boat rides, as well as fishing.
Unusual local climatic conditions are ideal for activities such as paragliding, hot air ballooning and skydiving. Spectacular day and night views may also be seen from helicopter or scenic aeroplane flights.
Canterbury offers a top selection of skiing and snowboarding attractions at top ski fields with fabulous scenery. The closest skifields to Eyrewell Downs are Porter Heights (1 hour drive) and Mt Hutt (1 1/4 hours drive) which is the largest ski area in Canterbury.
South Island vineyards exploit unique growing conditions that enable production of distinctive wines not produced in any other part of the world. Canterbury is now home to 10% of New Zealand's vineyards.
One of Australasia's premier tourist attractions, the International Antarctic Centre gives visitors a fun and hands on experience of the frozen continent.
Experience traditional Maori culture at the National Marae. Tour the Marae meeting houses, sample earth oven cooking with a selection of Hangi food, enjoy a performance by the Marae's cultural group, including poi dances, action songs and the famous Haka (war dance).
Christchurch Gondola. will give you unique 360 degree views of Christchurch, the Canterbury Plains and Lyttelton Harbour unfold as you rise to the summit complex. Have a meal or take a walk on the crater rim of Christchurch's famous extinct volcano before riding the gondola down. The adventurous can enjoy a mountain bike ride down to the gondola base.
Explore New Zealand?s rich cultural and natural heritage at the Canterbury Museum. The new natural history discovery centre is full of hands on ways to learn about New Zealand's flora and fauna.
Orana Wildlife Park, set on 80 hectares of park-like grounds, is New Zealand's largest wildlife and conservation centre and only open range zoo. Willowbank is another wildlife park giving you opportunity to experience first hand New Zealand wildlife and the delicate balance of this country's natural history. The Southern Encounter Aquarium and Kiwi House showcases native fauna which have evolved independently from that found on other land masses due to New Zealand's geographical isolation from any major continental land mass.
Christchurch's city parks and gardens (Hagley Park - sprawling central park; Sumner- seaside resort)offer an easy stroll on the flat. For the more athletic there are half and full day hikes (Godley Head - costal walk featuring old miliary buildings; the Bridle Path - winds its way up Mt Cavendish; Oxford Forest - a variety of walking tracks and picnic areas).
Further afield you can take a boat ride with the sperm whales off the coast of Kaikoura, relax in the therapeutic thermal waters at Hamner Springs or step back in history in Akaroa, the oldest township of Canterbury.

Guestbook for Eyrewell Downs
Goehring family, Georgia, USA Thank you so much for sharing your wonderful home. We loved the peace and quiet and the spaciousness of your home. The bedrooms were perfect. Roger's Mother loved the room next to the master with the canopy bed - we have renamed it the Queen's room! It was so nice of you to provide everything we needed including a very well stocked kitchen and first class appliances. We enjoyed the patios and the horses, sheep and cows nearby. We were amazed at the beautiful stars at night and the peacefulness. Everyday brought new discoveries. The 'boys' enjoyed the snooker table and so thoughtful to provide American pool balls. I loved the internet access - let us all stay in touch with home, family and friends. Cables were perfect and so nice that you provided everything we needed. The blowdryers were also a nice touch - saved us from having to use a converter! The flowers in the yard were gorgeous and the vase in the house was so thoughtful and welcoming. You have a first class home and we will definitely keep this in mind if we get to come back. We will also share your website with friends looking to head this way in the near future. I can't thank you enough for sharing your awesome home with us - your website is great - but the actual home far exceeded my expectations.
Sivananthan family, Arizona, USA Thanks for all your kindness and your efforts to make our trip to New Zealand a huge success. We loved Eyrewell Downs and the surrounding countryside. You have a beautiful home and we appreciate your sharing it with us. My nephews hardly left the snooker table and I must say I never got a game in! It was quite the hit!
Lisa and Cameron, Selby, Victoria, Australia Your house was lovely and most welcoming. I would say one of the best places we have stayed in, in the world and great price. Look forward to coming back!
Shaw family, Shropshire, England A lovely home in the country with first class facilities and a wonderful snooker table!
Anderson family, Hampshire, England Excellent family home situated exactly where we needed it. Very peaceful and relaxing.
