The South Island region
Located on the east coast of the South Island, Christchurch is a city of contrasts. It is close to beaches and only an hour or two drive to several ski fields. It has retained some lovely old architecture and boasts some wonderful new buildings. Known internationally as "The Garden City" it has Botanic Gardens, 161 hectare Hagley Park, tree lined avenues and the Avon River runs through the city. There are many expansive parks and public gardens.The Floral Festival is held there annually in February. In 1996, Christchurch was acknowledged as the outstanding garden city from 620 international entries.

The Antarctic Centre, Art Gallery, Museum, Arts Centre are just a few places to visit. Akaroa on Banks Peninsula is a lovely day trip from Christchurch. Also within a short drive are wineries, rafting and jetboating, horse trecking, fishing, gliding, parachuting, bungy-jumping, tramping, surfing and skiing.
