The West Country region
Of course, first and foremost Dorset is famous for its stunning coastline, The Jurassic Coast. However, there is an immense variety of landscape in Dorset. As well as its acid heathlands in the North-East there are the chalk downs and rich lush river valleys beyond. Along the coastline is Poole Harbour, one of the largest natural harbours in the world, while the nearby island of Portland Bill features huge white cliffs as well as being home to the amazing Chesil Bank.
Bournemouth and Poole are surrounded by some of the most beautiful Blue flag award status beaches as well as stunning countryside with the Purbecks & the New Forest just 15 minutes drive away in either direction. Bournemouth itself has many attractions including Bournemouth Gardens, Bournemouth Aquarium, endless shopping and excellent restaurants. Nearby Sandbanks is famous for its luxury properties, marina and award winning beaches. The Seafront Operation Teams work around the clock to ensure that Bournemouth maintains it's 4 blue flags, 1 Quality Coast and 1 Green Tourism Business Scheme Silver award and has also introduced innovative schemes such as Europe’s first solar powered self compacting recycling bins.
The nearby Purbecks and Swanage can be reached by car, bus, boat, bike or steam train. Dorset contains a complete record through almost 200 million years of earth history during the Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous periods of geological time including excellent spots such as Corfe Castle and Durdle Door. Also contained within this coast are a number of outstanding fossil localities and stunning features such as Chesil beach and impressive cliffs at Barton On Sea. Bournemouth is a cosmopolitan town and has 5 ½ miles of seafront and cliffs which are maintained to a high standard.
Weymouth and Portland will host all sailing events for the London 2012 Olympics! The area is a world class sailing destination with waters that are credited by the Royal Yachting Association as the best in Northern Europe. Sailing dates include 27th July – 12th August and the Paralympics on 29th August – 9th September 2012 (www.weymouth.gov.uk).
We will provide a full list of events & a general guide to Bournemouth with each booking for your information.
Christchurch is the most easterly coastal town of Dorset. It is effectively a part of the Bournemouth and Poole conurbation, although rather different in character. Although within the historic county boundaries of Hampshire, at the time of the 1974 local government re-organisation it was considered desirable that the whole of what is now called the South East Dorset conurbation, which includes Bournemouth and Poole, should be part of the same county.
The town lies between the rivers Avon (which flows from north of Salisbury) and Stour (which flows from north Dorset via Blandford Forum. These do not flow directly into the sea, but into Christchurch Harbour. The modern borough extends both north-west towards Bournemouth Airport, and eastwards along the coast.
Mudeford is a small fishing village in the borough of Christchurch, Dorset southern England, lying at the entrance to Christchurch Harbour. The Mudeford Ferry operates between the Quay and Mudeford Sandbank on Hengistbury Head. The beach huts, located on Mudeford Sandbank, can only be reached by foot or land train from Hengistbury Head, or by Ferry from Mudeford Quay.
