The Loire Valley / Loir-et-Cher region
The Loire Valley is one of the most beautiful regions of France - with lush green scenery, and the natural wildlife on the banks of the Loire River, and the Cher River. This offers ample opportunity for bird watching and many outdoor pursuits - such as rambling, walking and cycling tours.
For those with more historical interests, you find find many castles dotted along the riversides, as this part of France is steeped in history.
If wine is your cup of tea, then you will be spoilt for choice in this region - Sancerre, Muscadet, and Vouvray just a few to watch out for - there are wines and wine tours to suit all palates and budget. Some places can cater for children as well - Bouvet-Ladubay in Samur has a Masks Museum for children.
Chouze-sur-Loire area
There is so much to see and do in this area we could devote a whole web site to it!
Staying at Chez Carroi you will be able to meet the needs of all ages and tastes. The village of Chouze itself is a fantastic location for walking, cycling, bird watching, and you are in the centre of the one of the most famous wine regions in the world! A small Proxi convenience store has recently opened, handy when you don't want to drive to the supermarket in Bourgueil for those little extras.
If it's history you are interested in, then you are spoilt for choice, with seventeen spectacular Chateaux and Castles within a short drive. The architecture will astound! For the young or 'young at heart' a visit to Futuroscope near Poitiers is a must. This really is a theme park with a difference, and your children will be bowled over by it.
For motor racing enthusiasts, visiting Le Mans is the stuff that dreams are made of.
For those of us with more 'mature' tastes (or years!), this area is an ideal holiday choice, offering miles of level walking, often by the river, golf courses, and many tourist trails. Don't miss seeing the Troglodyte Caves and tunnels with their wine cellars and vineyards.
Activities on offer in this region are many and varied, taking full advantage of the river and the often spectacular scenery in the area. Canoe & Kayaking, Boat Hire, Horse Riding, Hot Air Ballooning, the list is almost endless, so planning your visit is well worth the time.
How to get there
We suggest Transmanche Ferries from Newhaven Dieppe, a friendly and relaxed approach to France. Then head to Rouen and on the autoroute to past Le Mans towards Tours and leave at Chateau du Loir. Drive south through Bourgueil to river Loire at Port Boutlet, turn west to Chouze sur Loire. Plenty of autoroute picnic spots to make driving an enjoyment, oh, don't forget euros for the tolls!! Or, Ryan Air from Stansted to Tours, a tiny airport but you can hire a car in advance. Very informal, if you return the car and the office is closed, well you just pop the key through their letterbox. Miss out driving through Tours itself and head on the autoroute towards Saumur, leaving at turning for Bourgueil. Follow Port Boulet sing and turn west to Chouze sur Loire. Train from London can be done, TGV via Paris to Tours and then car hire or to Port Boulet but you would have to bring bikes. Lovely scenery whichever direction you choose.
