About this location
The Chania Prefecture region
Apart from the beaches and good places to eat it would be remiss if we did not mention the monastery of Agia Traida (Holy Trinity) which is a mere 10 minutes by car from the villa. This was built in the seventeenth century by two brothers of the Venetian Zangaroli family who became monks when they had converted to the Orthodox faith.
Chania town. Spending time in the lovely old town of Chania is a must. The Old town is built around the Venetian harbour and the narrow winding lanes fanning away from the harbour are full of shops and places to eat and drink. As you wander through the streets be sure to look out for the signs of Chania's ancient Minoan past. The Venetian city wall can be seen particularly well along Karaoli Dimitriou Street and the best archaeological digs can be found along Kanevaro Street. If you take care you can come across many other digs around that part of the Old Town.
Also about an hour and a half away to the west are the wonderful beaches of Falasarna and Elafonisos. One must not forget the many ancient sites found both in and around Chania and then the most famous archaeological site of Knossos near Heraklion. For those who enjoy walking the Samaria gorge, one of the longest in Europe, is possibly a must. Start your journey almost in the middle of this part of the island and after 17 km downhill you will find yourself on the shores of the Libyan Sea in Agia Roumeli. There are a number of other possible shorter and less arduous walks both in gorges or along the coast and Akrotiri peninsula itself is ideal for hiking as well.
The villa is located about 20 minutes by car from the international airport of Chania. Less than a km from the house you will find the nearest village with several rustic tavernas and a mini-market which is open daily. There are 4 km to the nearest town, where there are supermarkets, ATM, pharmacy and several tavernas.
The area is very quiet and the Akrotiri peninsula, on which the villa is located, has some of the most beautiful sandy beaches, West Crete has to offer, all within easy reach from the villa. These are by no means crowded, as the area is more characterized by locals.
On the north and west are; Kalathas, a large sandy beach with a taverna on the beach serving tasty Greek food, perfect for families. Tersanas is a small sandy bay also perfect for families with small children and the water shelves very gently. There is a snack bar and a small traditional Greek taverna situated directly at the waterside. Stavros beach is the most northerly. This bay lies below the mountain now named after the film, “Zorba The Greek”, and it provides shelter in case of a windy day. There is also a small beach found directly beside the Thanasis taverna further round from Stavros. To the south of the Akrotiri are two more beaches. These are the small beach of Loutraki, with a small cantina and the slightly larger Marathi where there are a few bars and some fish tavernas to be found on the water front.
The main town is Kounoupidiana with a variety of shops and supermarkets for your shopping needs. Kounoupidiana has two banks with ATM machines, pharmacies and a selection of restaurants.
Eating out is still reasonably priced here and there are a good range of places to eat all over the Akrotiri from take away pizza to tavernas and restaurants. The variety encompasses traditional health Cretan cuisine in simple tavernas and fish tavernas all the way to the more cosmopolitan diet. Most use fresh locally grown and reared produce.
