The Loire Valley region

As well as historical visits, excellent food, wines and restaurants, the region is known to be "Cradle of France" - the real France. There are good quality local produce markets in most towns and villages, and plenty of annual fairs, festivals and concerts in the most unusual places throughout the area.

Go to nearby weekly markets, antique markets, visit local farms and buy local cheeses, nut oil, mushrooms, seasonal fruit and vegetables grown in the region (asparagus, strawberries, melons), and local wineries.

Discover the Loire Châteaux in a hot air balloon, go back to medieval times and experience the incredible Puy du Fou Medieval show, with real actors and knight battles, visit the ecoparc zoo at Doué-La-Fontaine, and go to the high-tech futuristic amusement park Futuroscope.

Activities include walking, cycling, canoeing, horse riding, swimming, water sports, golfing, etc

Ranton is located in the magnificent Loire Valley, between the medieval city of Chinon and refined town of Saumur. At the heart of French History, the region gorges with châteaux and churches to visit, and has kept the authenticity of real France.

The Château de Ranton is 30 kilometers south of the Loire River, which is a 30 minute drive from Chinon and 45 minutes from Saumur. It is a small village of 200 inhabitants, very typical of those in the area, consisting of a cluster of farms around the church and château.

The Château is the ideal starting point to visit the most famous and the lesser known castles and monastries.

"The magic of Ranton"

We have been to the chateau on several occasions and we are always uplifted when we walk across the moat and through the gates. There is a wonderful air of peace and tranquility about the place, it's a world of it's own and you can leave the real world behind. Peter and Paola, the owners, make you most welcome and have done a fantastic job in restoring the chateau, whilst retaining many pieces of interest. The rooms are all extremely comfortable and well equipped with beautiful soft furnishings. It's a brilliant place to use as a base to explore the surrounding countryside with many other imposing chateaux within striking distance. Peter and Paola also have a vast knowledge of all the best local restaurants and sights to see. The caves off the moat are definitely worth exploring as they used to be lived in.

"Second visit to a charming chateau with friendly and interesting hosts."

We have stayed at Ranton on two occasions. Both times Paola and Peter have made us extremely welcome and were always willing to give us help and advice regarding places to visit and restaurants in the surrounding areas. We really felt at home and they made us feel part of their family. Paola's breakfasts are simple but delicious. We will definitely return to Ranton when we next visit the area.
