The Loire Valley region
The Loire valley region is famed for it's wine, fairy-tale Chateaux and it's historic towns. In 2000, UNESCO added the central part of the Loire Valley, including the Maine-et-Loire region, to it's list of world heritage sites stating "an exceptional cultural landscape, of great beauty, comprised of historic cities and villages, great architectural monuments - the chateaux - and lands that have been cultivated and shaped by centuries of interaction between by local populations and their physical environment, in particular the Loire itself."
Chigne retains a strong rural culture and is surrounded by farms and woodland. For the physically active there are forest walks and cycling from the door. Locally, there is swimming (pools and lake), horse riding, tennis and golf. For those that prefer to relax, there is no better place to do that in the peace and seclusion of 'Le Pressoir'.
Markets in the area:
Monday: Local market at Baugé. From Noon until 7pm, in the Chateau carpark. Chateaux and town worth a visit.
Tuesday: Bougeuil, great for food. An hour away but worth a visit to see the vineyards and maybe buy some wine too!.
Wednesday: La Fleche, good for food, very pretty town.
Thursday: Le Lude, Chateau and gardens worth a visit.
Friday: Noyant, local market.
Saturday: Saumur, market set in Tudor style square, beautiful chateau.
Saturday: Angers, huge market selling all types of produce and antiques too, combine with a visit to the chateau.
