The Yucatan Peninsula region
YUCATAN is a sub tropical non-mountainous region. Good roads.
Many MAYAN archaeological sites nearby, with buildings, pyramids, and temples. Dzibilchaltun twenty minutes, Xcambo 30km, CHICHEN ITZA is a two hour drive. Don't miss the “Ruta Puuc”, a perfect day trip. Begin with the Lol Tun caves, and end with the new Light and Sound show in Uxmal.
Visit Sotuta de Peón for a full tour of a working hacienda, producing sisal rope from cactus.
Nearby port of Progreso (10km), has a nice sea front esplanade. Cruise ships stop here twice a week.

Local boat excursions to fresh water jungle springs nearby. Canoe trips through cienegas (everglades). Many Mayan archaeological sites nearby. Tours, guides, trips, shopping. Guided tours available.
CENOTES. Visit Cuzamá to get the feel of three different types of cenotes, under ground cavern lakes, sacred to the Mayans, a wonderful adventure. Magical experience.
Many pueblos with residents who are direct descendants from the Maya and speak Mayan language.
Chicxulub Puerto, is a laid back sleepy fishing village with a Spanish speaking population. Local foods are good. Population of a few hundred.
MERIDA TOURS. Carnavalito bus tours at 10am, 1pm, 4 pm, or 7pm from Santa Lucia Park in Merida, or the Turibus red double-decker tour bus that stops every two hours at the Plaza Grande. A more leisurely tour by horse drawn carriage through central Merida is delightful.
October to March you can take a tour of Mérida's homes and gardens every Wednesday.
