The Costa de la Luz region

The Costa de la Luz (Coast of light) is situated at the southernmost tip of Spain. The Summers are hot and sunny but not uncomfortably so, the Atlantic sea breezes relieve the heat and in the Winter the days remain warm and sunny so you can still sit outside and enjoy a drink or meal, and take part in your favourite sport or leisure activity. The beaches are very clean and sandy and development is low key (unlike the Costa del Sol).
There are many day trips to be had, some of which I have detailed:
Visit Cadiz (20 mins drive) the oldest city in Europe - narrow streets, town squares, beaches, museums and cathedral, tapas and restaurants. Visit the wonderful Ficus gardens with the many free flying parrots. Try someof the delicious fish - lubina (sea bass), almejas (clams) and langostinos (large prawns).
Drive to the hills and zig-zag your way to visit one of the (pueblo blancos) white towns, from Medina Sidonia, Arcos de la Frontera, Vejer de la Frontera, see the Roman and Moors influence, the clifftop views, cobblestone streets and beautiful squares.
Explore Tarifa (45 mins drive), the kite and windsurf capital and on the way visit Bolonia (the extensive Roman ruins of a large town (Baelo Claudia/Bolonia). Tarifa town has many charming restaurants and if you feel adventurous go on a whale and dolphin safari, or take a trip to Tangiers, Morocco and explore the souks and tantalise your tastebuds.
Take a drive to Jerez (35 mins drive) and visit some of the world's finest bodegas and sample the sherries and brandies, visit the famous dancing horses (The Royal Andalusian School of Equestrian Art is in the grounds of the Cadenas Palace; and just ouside Jerez is the Yeguada de la Cartuja where the beautiful Carthusian horses are bred) and explore the Moorish Alcazar, Mosque and Bath house. The cathedral is worth a visit with its Gothic and Renaissance styles. Flamenco Shows are to be found here. There is also a Zoo and Crocodile farm.
Drive to Gibraltar (80 mins drive) (remember your passport!) and take in the history with a cable car ride, visit the Barbary apes and rock, the caves and take advantage of the tax free shopping.
There are many golf courses within a 45 minute drive, they are not overcrowded, many offer packages which include lunch and the all-round weather with cheap flights make an ideal short break.
There is a large Theme Park (Isla Magica) to be found in Seville.
There is an excellent Water Park in Puerto Santa Maria. Also here there are lovely walks along the river and the many shellfish restaurants tempt you! You can also pick a passenger ferry up here and go over to Cadiz for less than 3.00 Euros.
A 13 km boat trip along the Guadalquivir River from Sanlucar de Barrameda (buy tickets in the old Ice factory on the front) takes you through the Donana National Park, home to many permanent and visiting species of wildlife. There are over 100 species of birds which are known to reside here, as well as amphibians, reptiles, and several species of fish. There is a rich variety of mammals, such as the lynx and the mongoose. There are also red and fallow deer, and wild boar.
There are many Ferias and Carnivals in the local area. Semana Santa (Easter) has many processions on a grand scale in most towns. The Feria de Abril is a week long party of fine food, flamenco and fino! The first week of May offers the Spring horse fair in Cadiz. September is party time in Jerez with carnivals and horse parades. The local Chiclana Feria is around the 13 June. During the Summer months there is much on offer - brochures and details of local festivals and activities are provided.
The Chiclana / Pago Del Humo area
Pago del Humo is a small village on the outskirts of Chiclana. There is a supermarket (fresh bread, fruit/veg and butcher), a pharmacy, many Venta/Bar Restaurants and a large DIY/repairs shop.
Chiclana itself (5 mins drive) is a typical Spanish town. It has attractive traditional style buildings and a pedestrianised shopping area. There is also a covered indoor market selling fresh fruit, vegetables, meat, and a great variety of fish and shellfish open 8 am - 2 pm. Most of the vegetables are local grown and they taste superb! There is also an outdoor market held on a Tuesday from approx 10 am - 2 pm (near the blue bridge in the centre of town by the bull ring). There are many churches, squares, shops and restaurants to visit in Chiclana.
The Feria, this year is the week around the 13 June and is spectacular. See the locals dress up in their flamenco costumes, ride to the Feria on horseback, enjoy the Tapas, Music, Sherry and Ambience. Take the kids around the Fairground, see the lights and the Fireworks!
The Chiclana Spa, at Fuente Amarga offers various treatments including mud baths and massage.
Casa Mariposas is approximately 15 minutes drive from the fabulous Blue Flag sandy beach of La Barrosa (over 7 kms) long with many facilities for the children in the Summer. Next to La Barrosa is the unspoilt Sancti Petri beach where the river comes in. The abandoned village of Sancti Petri has a fishing harbour, marina and a water sports centre, you can hire a Kayak, go banana boating, take a boat trip around the bay and see the Island of Hercules.
A Moroccan Hammam at Novo Sancti Petri offers candlelit baths, massage, dining and bellydance performances, in a beautiful setting, perfect for relaxing. Enjoy a romantic dinner on the rooftop terrace with views across the pine forest. There is a large commercial centre at Novo Sancti Petri.
There is also a Medical Clinic in Chiclana Town (open 24 hrs a day), where some English is spoken, should you be unfortunate enough to have a medical problem while on holiday.
