The Costa de la Luz region

The Costa de la Luz (Coast of Light), runs along the Atlantic coast from Portugal in the north, down to Tarifa in the south. It's one of Spain's best kept secrets, with its miles of unspoilt sandy beaches.
There’s an excellent road network which makes it a great base for exploring the local towns and sights. Jerez is worth a visit; famous for making sherry, you can visit the many bodegas, see how sherry is made and enjoy a sample. The zoo and botanical gardens are also a great day out.
It's also worth taking time to visit the beautiful city of Seville with its fabulous palaces and gardens. Climb the Giralda Tower to enjoy the spectacular views across the city.
Gibraltar is just over an hour away. On a clear day the views from the top of the rock are fantastic, you can see across to Africa. The caves and tunnels within the rock are also worth exploring.
For a fun day out, there’s a great water park at Puerto Santa Maria (Aqualand) - book on line to benefit from a discount.
The Chiclana / Hozanejos area
Chiclana de la Frontera is an old Spanish town just south of Cádiz, in the sherry region of Andalucía. With narrow streets and cool courtyards, it's a typical Andalucían town. Its local market is worth visiting for fresh meat, fish, vegetables and delicious Iberico Jamon and chorizo.
Surrounded by pine woods and salt marshes, the area is in the Bay of Cádiz Natural Park which is a protected area providing fantastic habitat for an assortment of animals and birds. Flamingos and storks are frequent visitors to the area.
La Barrosa beach is just 15 minutes drive from the villa. Stretching 8km, with fine white sand, the beach has been awarded a European Blue flag for its environmental standards. It's regarded as one of the best beaches on the coast. Life guards, on duty all day, ensure this is a safe family beach. Showers are provided on the beach. Bars and restaurants are dotted along the promenade where you can enjoy delicious local dishes, fish and tapas.
North of La Barrosa is the smaller beach area of Sancti Petri, which is an old abandoned fishing village. The beach overlooks the island of Sancti Petri. It’s an area well known for its windsurfing and surfing along with sailing, canoeing and kite surfing all of which can be found around the bay at Sancti Petri. You can also take a boat trip down the coast and at the right time of year you can even go whale watching. There are also a number of restaurants specialising in fish, making it a popular area with locals at weekends.
Novo Sancti Petri, just south of La Barrosa, is a modern resort area with hotels and shops. There are lots of activities to get involved in: cycling, quad bikes, tennis, horse riding, a driving range and a number of excellent golf courses. If you enjoy golf, there are some fantastic golf courses within a 45 minute drive. The nearest, is just 5 minutes away from the villa.

We spent a great week at Casa ClaraMaria. The weather was wonderful and we spent some lovely relaxing days by the very good sized pool. We visited Seveille and Gibralter, both about an hour away. The villa was clean and was very well equipped. We did explore some of the surrounding area. The beaches, which are about 10 minutes away by car,are spacious and very clean, the sea is wonderful. We did not have enough time to visit all the wonderful places this area has to offer. We need to revisit ! |

We spent one week @ Casa ClaraMaria and it just was not long enough to do justice to the region! The Villa itself was just as described and the pool a "godsend" as the temperatures were into the 90's each day. We flew into Seville and picked up our hire car @ the airport. The journey to Chiclana was straight forward enough on motorways although we had time to kill before our due arrival time and meandered our way.Eileeen ( housekeeper) was very pleasant and was happy to meet us earlier than the 4:00pm arrival time as the house was ready to move into, following the departure of the previous guests. Places to see : Cadiz (we went in by train from san Fernando- easy to park car there and such a super efficient and clean/new train!!!) Then took open top tourist bus to see sights. Well worth the visit. : Jerez- drove and found car parking underground without problems. Did trip aroung the Gonzalez Byass Sherry Bodega inluding tapas and sherry tasting. Arrive for an English tour - 12:00 and 2:00 Really interesting and so cool inside the bodegas !! : Gibraltar- drove again although read ( on the way back) it was not advisable take your car into Gibraltar difficult to park. Luckily we again found a car park and enjoyed our visit. We came back up the coast taking in the beaches @ Tarifa to watch the kite surfers( amazing!!!!) : Beaches too numerous to mention but all clean, with sea surprisingly warm. Waves a plenty on some of the more secluded beaches. ( There is a useful " scribble pad " in the Villa with directions to some of the best beaches) We chose to eat in @ the Villa mainly because of the heat during the day and the pleasant coolness on the back terrace once the sun had gone down. However, there were many places to eat according to the literature in the Villa had we have chosen to do so!!! |
Guestbook for Casa ClaraMaria
Your house was lovely and clean and the pool is nice and big. Everything was great about our holiday, even the local venta was lovely and entertaining. Your house manager Eileen and Matt were very kind.
The good thing about the house is the aircon, it meant we could sleep nice and cool which is very important. Overall we had a great holiday in Casa Clara Maria.
