Barn | 3 bedrooms | sleeps 6
The Granary is extremely spacious, occupying the central part of the barn dating from 1844 - graded 5 star Gold by Visit England. Large full height windows at either side of the barn give fabulous views both from the large entrance hall and the first floor gallery. The tiled entrance hall has a sitting area one end with beautiful views over the garden and woodland beyond.
Two bedrooms are on the ground floor, one with French windows opening out onto its own patio. The third bedroom is upstairs. The living area upstairs is open plan, with a high vaulted ceiling and original oak beams that gives a delightful area to relax in front of the wood burning stove. It also includes a spacious dining area and a well-equipped oak kitchen with a second dining area.
The private garden is fenced, giving a secure area for children to play, and for dogs. There is a large patio area, with table and chairs for 8 and a charcoal barbecue, leading onto a large grassed area.
The area is ideal for walking or cycling through beautiful countryside teeming with wildlife such as deer, pheasants, kestrels and red kites. In the evening look out for badgers, tawny owls and pipistrelle bats. The woods above the farm are a picture in May and June with bluebells and wild orchids. From the top of the farm on a clear day there are stunning views of Chichester Harbour and the Isle of Wight. A footpath runs alongside the garden leading directly to a pub in the village of Stoughton,10 minutes walk through scenic woodlands. A 20 minute walk in the opposite direction along a country lane and fields leads to a pub in the village of Walderton.

The South East England region
The South of England has lots to offer visitors, with the South Downs National Park, an area of outstanding natural beauty which stretches 100 miles from Winchester to Beachy Head in East Sussex. Visitors can walk or cycle along the South Downs Way, a national trail that follows old routes along chalk enscarpment and ridges of the Downs, explore the historic towns and charming villages, or enjoy the stunning coastline and beaches.
Pitlands Barns is situated on a working farm between the villages of Walderton and Up Marden in the heart of the South Downs National Park. From the top of the farm on a clear day, there are stunning views of Chichester harbour and the Isle of Wight. Walk or cycle on the many footpaths and bridleways through ancient woodlands and beautiful countryside in the surrounding area. These footpaths link to the Southdowns Way, a 100 mile footpath stretching from Winchester to Eastbourne. The nearest pub is two miles by road, but only a 10 minute walk through the woods. The nearest village shop is 5 km away.
The historic city of Chichester is 8 miles away with its Cathedral, The Festival Theatre, Planetarium and Galleries.
Portsmouth lies 15 miles away with its Historic Dockyard and shopping, restaurants and entertainment at Gunwarf Quays. There are regular crossings to the Isle of Wight for day trips.
Goodwood Estate is 8 miles away with its horse racing, Festival of Speed and The Revival. Polo at Cowdray and horse racing at Fontwell are within easy reach too.
There are National Trust properties at Stansted House and Uppark House nearby, and Fishbourne Roman Palace is just 5 miles away. Pitlands Barns is on the site of a Roman Villa built in the same era, some of which was excavated in 1967, but has since been covered over. Some coins and pottery are on display in the barns.

"Far from the Maddening Crowd"
I think this is one of the best places I have stayed at. It is very much in the countryside, surrounded by beautiful fields and woodland and I have stayed at some wonderful places. The accommodation was spotlessly clean, well equipped and very spacious. Everything about it was just perfect. The owners were very helpful and kind and we had a very nice welcome pack on arrival which included a homemade sponge and wine and eggs. I would love to stay here again as I think it was the perfect retreat. I would highly recommend it.

"Spacious, warm and very comfortable accommodation - just perfect!"
First of all I must apologies for writing my review so late. My husband and I have been traveling for three months and it has been on my mind to write this well deserved review.
We booked Pitlands Farm (The Granary) for a family pre Christmas get-together 2013. My husband & I live in Thailand most of the year and wanted to choose a place that was spacious, warm and would comfortably accommodate us all. Pitlands Farm was that and more.
Beautifully renovated and oozing with character 'The Granary' was a pleasure to simply hang out in. Surrounded by fields and county lanes and yet only a 20 min car ride to the quaint historic market town of Chichester and great for our Xmas shopping!
Jenny & Philip were lovely hosts and are only a 'stones throw away' if we needed any advice or help.
The barn has everything you need, a large kitchen, washing machine & dishwasher. Three beautifully furnished bedrooms, all with en-suits and lush towels. A huge dining table (great for our Xmas dinner) and four couches to chill out on (one being a bed settee) surrounding the wood-burner and in-front of a large TV.
As it was cold outside we enjoyed keeping the wood burner going (Jenny and Philip kindly supplied the logs) . . . not that we really needed it as the barn warms up lovely from the under floor heating.
Thank you Jenny & Philip for making us feel so welcome and for allowing us to stay in your beautiful country barn. We loved it and we would certainly recommend it and we hope to be back if you'll have us : )
