The South East England / Sussex region
On the edge of the proposed South Downs National Park, and the Chichester Harbour Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty it is an ideal location to explore, yet still only 1.25 hours by train from London. Plenty of culture with Chichester Theatre and Art Galleries, Stately Homes and Gardens to visit. Portsmouth, the home of the Royal Navy with Nelson's flagship HMS Victory, HMS Warrior and the Mary Rose historic ships and dockyard for boys both old and young to explore. Shopping in the Georgian city of Chichester or the modern Gunwharf Quays in Portsmouth. Blue flag beaches with plenty of sand for young children to enjoy.
Chichester / Westbourne area
The village of Westbourne has 4 pubs serving food and drinks, an Indian Restaurant and Fish and Chip shop, as well as a bakery, Co-op general store and Post Office, florist and chemist, all a short level walk away from the cottage. Nearby Emsworth has a selection of 5 good restaurants ( one with a Michelin *) and ten pubs as well as cafes and take aways. Emsworth Food Festival in September each year draws in crowds to sample local fare. There are plenty of opportunities for indulging in water sports - sailing, windsurfing, kite surfing, fishing, kayaking etc and for harbour tours aboard a solar powered boat. Cinemas, theatres, museums, historic homes and gardens, leisure centres and ten pin bowling are all within a 15km radius.
How to get there
The village of Westbourne is about 3 miles from the A3 and A27M, and approximately 1½ miles from Emsworth Quay on the shores of Chichester Harbour . Chichester lies about 8 miles to the east, and Portsmouth 9 miles to the west. A short car ride from the train stations of Emsworth on the South Coast line, and Rowlands Castle and Havant on the mainline from Portsmouth to London ( Waterloo).
Day trips by ferry / fast catamaran can be taken to the Isle of Wight or Cherbourg in France from the nearby ferry terminal of Portsmouth .
