The North West Italy / Italian Riviera/Liguria region

East of Genova ( 40 km) is the Tigullio bay which stretches from Portofino to Sestri Levante. The bay has fine long sandy-gravel beaches, large Marinas in Chiavari and Lavagna. This beautiful coastline offers elegant seaside resorts like Santa Margherita, Rapallo with Golf club, riding centre and cultural events , Zoagli a small cosy serene beauty-spot, Sestri Levante in the Bay of Silence , two arms of the sea embracing a village suspended in blue, and the CINQUE TERRE nearby.
Chiavari, a typical Ligurian city with ancient arched shopping streets, daily fruit market and the well known antique market which is held every weekend.
Last but not least Portofino which does not need to be introduced to you: the rich and beautiful ( and you) in the little harbour for an aperitive , capuccino or meal. at daytrip distance : Tuscany flrence, Siena etc.
The Chiavari area
East of the Tigullio bay starts the region of the " Cinque Terre" which is best reached by train ( from Chiavari, 30 minutes) : five miles of rocky shore , thousands of km of dry stone walls cultivated with vines, five " cinque" little villages" Terre" once only possible to reach by sea . It is a national park and has a dramatic coast falling sheer to the sea with cliffs, which are often vertical . Enchanting beaches among the rocks . The villages are interconnected by a footpath high over the cliffs, with unforgettable views.
Portofino hill is also a National Park with marvellous walks through the pine forest above the deep blue sea to S.Fruttuoso, an ancient monastery which stands alone on its tiny bay. There are many sailing regattas around these beautiful Riviera towns, where the beautiful people have always come to get away from it all.
One week 's holiday in Chiavari is too short: beach-life; sea trips to Portofino and San Fruttuoso , or all the way down to Porto Venere; walking in the Cinque Terre; shopping in Genova; Zoagli a must, Nervi 's sea promenade you should not miss etc.
Taste the typical wine of this region( WE OFFER OURS AND OUR OIL INCLUDED in the price) and all the genuine gastronomic delicacies like the fresh marinated anchovies, the home made sweet and salted cakes and pasta , Pesto, Panzotti, Focaccia, a liqueur made from lemons, and fish from the Santa Margherita fish market etc. Try all the dazzling fruits and salads and vegetables you will find in the daily market in Chiavari's ancient Town Hall square.
A day in Genoa (home of Columbus) is a must with its amazing AQUARIUM which all ages can enjoy, and the ancient palazzi like PALAZZO DUCALE - this ancient port combines its medieval maritime past with new developments and modern trade exhibitions like the Salone Nautico where the finest boats are on show. It is also home to the theatre Carlo Felice, totally rebuilt to the highest technical and aesthetic standards - and of course all the famous Italian shops.
Florence is a 3 hour drive away, or take the train to PISA to check out that Tower, then train to Florence - a long but rewarding day out.
