Il fienile is nestled amongst the forest and vineyards of Chianti. Outdoor dining, a private swimming pool and a cool and spacious interior will help restore the most jaded. Gaiole, the nearest village (3 kms) is well served by bars, restaurants, wine shops and of course food outlets. If you wish a change of scenery Siena is only 25km to the south and Florence is 56 kms to the north. In fact most of the major attractions of Tuscany are within a comfortable daytrip.

The Tuscany region

Tuscany is physically one of the most blessed regions of Italy, the so called garden of Italy. It boasts an extraordinary wealth of medieval and renaisance architecture, sculpture and painting. Its cuisine though simpler than in other parts of Italy still has the same regard for care in preparation and quality of produce. For the visitor who wishes to restock their wardrobe apart from the leather makers of Florence the place is littered with the artisan workshops and factories whose work ends up labeled by some of the biggest names in Italian fashion.

Chianti / Gaiole area

Chianti is a region of Tuscany famous for its wines. Gaiole, an old market town is nestled comfortably between Florence, Siena and Arezzo. The curious traveller will be well rewarded by simply following their nose. Walled hamlets, fortified villages, market towns dot the landscape. Because of its agricultural importance and the wealth of its medieval and renaisance patrimony, Chianti has escaped the blight of overdevelopment keeping intact its postcard beauty but with none of the prissyness. Spring and summer are punctuated by concerts, out door plays and of course wine tastings.

How to get there

Ryan Air flies into Pisa and Meridian Air flies into Florence.

Arriving in Pisa take the autostrada to Florence (Firenze) and connect with the A1 for Rome. Exit the autostrada at the Valdarno exit. Follow the signs for Montevarchi, Carviglia, Gaiole in Chiant. You will need to keep your eyes peeled as Italian road signs do not give you a lot of warning. You will pass through the outskirts of Terranova Bracciolina and Montevarchi. Follow the sings for Gaiole in Chianti. Some of the signs may not feature Gaiole but they wil invariably mention Siena, good enough.

When you arrive in Gaiole drive through the town in the direction of Siena. After approx 1.5 kms you will come to a bridge to your left featuring signs directing you to Rietine and Castanogli amongst others. Take this road and follow it to the 1.0km mark (distance is signed every 100 meters). At this point slow down for at precisely the 1.1km mark there is a dirt road immediately to your left. This left turn has to be negotiated whilst the main road curves right sharply.

Take the dirt road to the end (ignoring the left fork) and you will see the house after approx 350 meters.

All bedrooms are made up with double beds, though two singles can be provided if notice is given at the time of the booking.

The barn is situated some 75 meters from the old house in which the english speaking owner lives.

Further details outdoors:
Outside under the shade of a pine is a small terrace that contains a barbeque and seating for six.

I have no desire to make the property unwelcoming for young families but it must be noted that the pool is deep and unfenced and so small children must be supervised at all times to avoid incident.

Guestbook

Overall impression: Excellent, beautifully fitted out with lovely antique furniture and extra effects plus lots of interesting books, also the pool was super and kept very clean . We loved the wild boars in the forest, it was truly a wonderful setting. (Joy Gemmill, U.K.)

...indeed we had a marvellous holiday at Il Fienile - which is a most tasteful, beautiful conversion with a terrific,
sheltered pool in an idyllic part of Chiantishire - with lots of garden and
stunning views. (Susan Hoyal, U.K.)

It was stunningly gorgeous...the pictures on the website don't do it justice at all (and they look really good)!Marco has such an amazing attention to detail: all the finishing touches--from the at least 250-thread count sheets on the beds, to the fluffy towels, to the marble countertops in the kitchen
and the brand-new state-of-the-art appliances, to the fabulous paintings and antiques placed throughout the house--were perfect. We felt completely and totally spoiled, which made us very glad that our stay here was during our second week in Italy! Otherwise, we'd have been ruined for anyplace else.
(Tracy Plummer, USA)
