The North Thailand / Chiang Rai Province region
Chiang Rai has it's own international aiport with over 5 direct flights a day from Bangkok. Located 785 kilometres north of Bangkok, Chiang Rai is the capital of Thailands northernmost province. At an average elevation of nearly 600 metres above sea level and covering an area of appoximately 11,700 square kilometres, the province borders Myanmar to the north, and Lao PDR to the north / north east. The area is largely mountainous, with peaks rising to 1,500 metres above sea level, and flowing between the hill ranges are several rivers, the most important being the Kok, near which the city of Chiang Rai is situated. In the far north of the province is the area known as the 'Golden Triangle', where the Mekong and Ruak rivers meet to form the borders of Thailand, Myanmar (Burma) and Lao PDR. Inhabiting the high lands are hilltribes like the Akha, Lahu, Lusu, and Karen (Longneck) .
Chiang Rai was founded by King Mangrai in 1262 and became the capital of the Mangrai / Lanna dynasty. The famous emerald Buddha now located in the Grand Palace in Bangkok, originally came from Chinag Rai, discovered hidden inside an old chedi at the temple of Wat Phra Kaeo (just 400 metres from the condo). A lightning strike revealed it hidden inside in 1432. This was seen as a holy event, and the old Kings of Siam ordered it to be taken to each capital city. Now residing in the Grand Palace in Bangkok, this priceless object, belived to be carved in 232 B.C, can still be seen today.
Whether you are an experienced traveller to Thailand, or it is your first time, Chiang Rai has got so much to offer both. Old temples, volcanic hot springs & spas, Massage shops, long tail boat rides or white water rafting, elephant camps & rides, Jungle Trecks, beautiful water falls, and lots of real old Thai culture. Great photo opportunitys around every corner.

The area is nick named the golden triangle as the borders of Thailand,Myanmar (Burma) & Laos's all meet in the province of Chiang Rai. China's border is also very close. Ideal for travellers wishing to collect visa stamps. Tours for travelling to the mountains, and meeting the various hill tribes are widely available, as well as trips up river to the elephant villages. All at cheap prices. The night bazaar in Chiang Rai is a must. Great hand crafts at cheap prices. Great food, and great street entertainment.

Guestbook for Chiang Rai Condo
Out of all my holiday homes, this is my favourite. I have travelled all over Thailand over the last 5 years, and Chiang Rai is my favourite spot. A nice quiet relaxed pace of life, and tourist friendly. Quiet and safe enough to drive a motorcycle, and lots of quality dining spots and places of interest to visit. Lots of money spent here, ensuring a quality comfortable stay.
