Fair Earth Farm
Farmhouse | 2 bedrooms | sleeps 5
Fair Earth Farm is a 1/2-hectare organic farm about 30 minutes drive north of Chiang Mai city in northern Thailand. We're an ideal place for a few days escape from the city (but still nearby). Surrounded by rice fields and orchards, with mountain views in the distance, Fair Earth Farm is nearby to city convenience but beyond the sprawl and traffic.
All-you-can-eat organic farm food is included in the stay price. The produce is quite diverse but seasonal. We have what we have: free-range duck eggs and chicken meat; fresh fish from the pond; seasonal herbs, fruit, vegetables, root crops. If guests want additional food or beverages, they are welcome to buy it and cook it themselves.
Our staff can cook tasty and healthy local dishes, and show you how it's done. Green smoothies and locally grown coffee and tea are available upon request. Children can collect eggs, berries and herbs, explore the "food forest," pet the pigs and have a swim in the pond. Dad can sit in the shade and fish. Mom can book the local masseuse or enjoy a quiet read from our library. There's no extra charge for these and more on-farm activities.
But this place is IDEAL for people who like to cook and are bored of restaurant food. We can help with prep or leave you to your own devices. (This is optional, of course; you don't have to cook if you don't want.)
Visitors are welcome to join in farm activities or just relax, catch fish or bicycle around the village. Kids love it! (See the Fair Earth Farm FB page for pictures.)

The North Thailand region
Chiang Mai is a fast-growing city in northern Thailand. Growing fast means it's become both more convenient and more difficult. You can get a great espresso and shop at either local markets or flashy shopping malls. But urban sprawl and traffic are taking their toll on the atmosphere.
Fair Earth Farm is a 30 minute drive from about anywhere in Chiang Mai city, but it feels like you're in the middle of the countryside. Surrounded by rice fields and orchards and mountain views, the neighborhood is green and peaceful. It's a good place to escape the city, but close enough to get back into it if you need some nightlife or a nice restaurant.
In terms of weather, the cool season from October through early February is the best time to visit. Bring a sweater for evenings, but it's usually shorts and T-shirt weather during the day. Late August through early October is the rainiest time, but it rarely rains all day. Evening rain showers help to keep the weather fresh and cool, and it's the greenest time of year.
Late February through April is the smog season, when the air becomes dangerous to breathe. We do not recommend that you visit northern Thailand during this time. If in Thailand, head south to the islands. Ko Tao is wonderful.
We have annual guests from June 15-Aug 15 and the farm is unavailable.
Muang Kaew Municipality is still largely rural, with rice fields, fruit orchards and flower fields (chrysanthemum, mostly). It lies along the east bank of the Ping River. Fair Earth Farm is about 1 km east of the river, lying along a wide swathe of scenic rice fields. It's a popular area for bicycling, with plenty of quiet roads and friendly villages.
To the south of the area is Chiang Mai city proper, with restaurants, spas, malls etc etc. To the west and east are mountains and forests with hiking and mountain biking trails, waterfalls and a reservoir for swimming and picnicking. To the north is the popular Mae Sa valley (elephants, resorts, etc) and the gateway to the beauty and nature of northern Thailand: national parks, hilltribe trekking, Golden Triangle, roads to Burma and Laos, the Mekong River and a lot of great places to visit.
A couple of hours drive in any direction provides opportunities for all sorts of adventures. We can advise about off-the-beaten-track excursions and help find drivers and good accommodations. We especially recommend community-based tourism visits to mountains villages and homestays with families.
