Home description

This lovely cottage sleeps two to six people and has three bedrooms. It is on a tranquil, private lane in the small farming hamlet of Alton, in the award-winning parish of Ashover and on the edge of the scenic Peak District National Park. Perched on top of a hill, there are fantastic views over the valley where you can see Hardwick Hall (National Trust) and Bolsover Castle (English Heritage) on the skyline.

Columbine Cottage perfectly combines the comforts of modern living with the charm and character of a country cottage. It has been furnished and equipped to a high standard whilst retaining many original features. In recognition of this it has received a four star quality grading by VisitBritain. The cottage also has its own private garden with barbecue and furniture for those lazy summer days. There is an open log fire for cosy winter evenings

The Heart of England / Peak District / Peak District/Derbyshire region

The Peak District National Park covers 500 square miles across several counties and attracts visitors from around the world. Derbyshire is famous for its natural beauty from peaks and dales to picturesque villages. It really does have something for everyone – for the more energetic there is fantastic walking, sailing and climbing. It has more historic houses than you can shake a stick at – Chatsworth, Hardwick and Haddon to name but three. For families there are caves and caverns to explore, theme parks to visit and cable cars and trams to ride. Or why not simply stroll around our many pretty towns and villages or potter about the countryside. No wonder many of our visitors come back time and time again.

Chesterfield / Ashover area

Alton is a small and friendly farming village of around thirty stone cottages. A short walk of less than half a mile from Columbine Cottage is the Fabrick Rock. This is 299 metres above sea level and, on clear days, offers spectacular views of Derbyshire and across five other counties: Yorkshire, Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire and Staffordshire. Look for the stone steps carved into the hillside next to it and follow the public footpath to Ashover.

If you like horse-riding or would you like to learn please visit Alton Riding School which is a few hundred metres from the cottage.

Alton is too small for a pub or a shop but several can be found in Ashover which is a mile away by road but closer if you go on foot cross-country following one of several footpaths from Columbine Cottage down the hill. Ashover is frequently described as one of the prettiest villages in Derbyshire and it hosts a famous traditional country show on the 2nd Wednesday in August every year – definitely not to be missed!

How to get there

Columbine Cottage is situated in the small village of Alton close to Ashover. It is 5 miles from both Matlock and Chesterfield but there is no public transport in the village so a car is essential. Travelling time from either juntion 28 or 29 of the M1 motorway is around 20 minutes.

Further details outdoors:
The peaceful little hamlet of Alton is in beautiful countryside on the fringes of the scenic Peak District National Park. Don’t make the mistake of thinking this is the home of the Alton Towers theme park – that's in Staffordshire 33 miles away. Our Alton is a sleepy hamlet in the prize-winning parish of Ashover. Columbine Cottage is the ideal base for exploring all this area has to offer and visitors often comment on how centrally located it is for reaching the many attractions of Derbyshire and the Peak District. For example Chatsworth is just over 7 miles away - 15 minutes by car. There is excellent walking from the doorstep with horse-riding in the village. The “Crooked Spire” town of Chesterfield and the resort of Matlock Bath are both within a few miles. Chatsworth House and the “White Peak” dales around Bakewell and Dovedale are all an easy drive away.

There are several excellent pubs which serve food in the vicinity – at least half a dozen of them just over a mile away in the neighbouring villages of Ashover, Milltown and Woolley Moor.

The cottage has its own private garden with barbecue and furniture for those lazy summer days. There is also a small shed - useful for storing bicycles. Parking for two cars.
