The Costa Blanca / Valencia / Valencia Province region

The Costa Azahar translates as The Orange Blossom Coast, this is because each Spring the air is laden with the heady scent of orange blossom eminating from the orange groves surrounding the City of Valencia. The historic City has a fascinating blend of old and new architecture and is well worth a visit.
There are many sporting activities to behold within the city from the F1 grand Prix street circuit to the Valencia Open 500 Tennis Tournament held in the futuristic arena known as the Agora. Alongside football at the famous 'Mestalla' stadium where Valencia CF play their exciting football there are many other sports such as the Americas Cup.
There are many excellent beaches in and close by Valencia as well as the National Park of Albufera where there is a large fresh water lake separated from the sea by a thin strip of land. Here you will find the paddy fields where the rice is grown for the traditional Paella.
Every March in Valencia there is 'The Fallas' a world famous fiesta where huge papier-mâche monuments (fallas) are erected in the crossroads and squares of Valencia around the 15th of March and ceremonially set alight on the night of the 19th, St Joseph's Day. Costing thousands of Euros each, the fallas depict satirical scenes and can take up to a year to build. During the fiesta, the city echoes to the sound of fire crackers, parades with traditional dress and music, Paellas cooked in the street and a host of entertainments. There are massive firework displays and every day in the Town Hall Square at 2.00pm the spectacular and noisy Mascletá is held, during which 100 kilos of gunpowder is used every day.
There is also the emotional offering of the flowers to the Virgin where thousands of bunches of red, pink and white Carnations are placed on a huge wooden statue of the Virgin. We thoroughly recommend this fiesta and attend it every year ourselves.
The Cheste area
Just 10 minutes down the road is the local town of Cheste. There you will find all the facilities you need, post office, banks, supermarkets, shops, etc. There is also a railway station with regular trains to Valencia, Chiva, Buñol and many other towns of historical interest.
There is a beautiful old church, well worth a look. In the town are many bars, cafes, restaurants, including two Chinese restaurants who also offer a take away service. Many of the restaurants/bars offer at lunchtime a 3 course meal known as 'Menu del Dia' usually priced at between 7€ - 9€, this includes a glass of wine or a beer.
There are many festivals in Cheste including bull runs and wine season celebrations to honour the grape harvest.
Just outside of the town is the Circuito Ricardo Tormo the racing track where they hold various races throughout the year. These include the motorcycle Moto GP, World Touring car championships and also at certain times of the year there is Formula One car testing when for a small charge you can watch the cars going around the track.
Just a few kilometres from Cheste is the Town of Buñol where every August they hold the famous 'Tomatina' fiesta, the high point of which is a sticky food fight. It attracts thousands of visitors dressed in their worst clothes. Lorry loads of ripe tomatoes are provided by the town council for participants to hurl at each other. No one in range of the combatants is spared: foreigners and photographers are prized targets. The battle originated in 1944. Some say it began with a fight between friends, others say irreverent locals pelted civil dignitaries with tomatoes during a procession. Increasing national and international press coverage means that more people attend, and more tomatoes are thrown every year. Not for the faint hearted!

Apartment de la Vista is ideally situated to visit the wonderful city of Valencia. The apartment is very clean and has everything you need to make your stay comfortable. Sheila and Steve (and Tula their lovely dog) made us very welcome, it was an ideal base for exploring the area, and after our days out we were able to enjoy a dip in the pool then relax with a glass of wine (or two) and enjoy the fabulous sunsets from the Terrace. Top Tip... If Steve is around and isn't too busy, try to persuade him to make a Paella (he's not above bribery!!!), it's fantastic, with a glass of wine, a perfect end to the day. Valencia is well worth a visit, lots to see and do including the biggest indoor market in Europe and the Arts and Sciences Park. The boat trip on Lake Albufera followed by a leisurely meal at one of the nearby outdoor restaurants was a great way to celebrate my birthday, and chocolate and churros in Santa Catalina the oldest chocolateria in Valencia is a must for chocoholics. An excellent holiday, we'll definitely go back... David and Alison Boyes |

Wonderful hosts, immensely helpful, ideal spot in the countryside being quiet and peaceful and yet a short drive away from all the superb sight and sounds of Spain's third largest city. Another massive plus point is it's close to the Ricardo Tormo (Valencia) Race circuit, for Moto GP, Touring Cars etc etc. Stunning views from the terrace of the city and the 'med' in the distance, orange groves, beautiful sunrises. The hosts can pick you up from the airport, but I recommend you hire a car. The local village , Cheste, has ample shop for any provisions. Definately go again. Response: Thank you very much for your review, you were great guests and look forward to your return next year. |
